Well guys, I blew a head gasket out in the pasture. The barn is full, so no shop. I'm gonna pull the heads outside. Anyone else work on their trucks outside? Is there a easy way to keep the wind from blowing dirt & crap into the engine block?
First, you cover a good size part of the ground so that you won't stir up dust from there. Concrete is preferable, but maybe some good, thick plywood will do.
Then, to keep out any rain and falling leaves and the like, put up a simple overhead panel. Just raise it up on 4x4 studs. After that, it's not a big deal to go ahead and nail up some plywood on the sides to keep the wind out, and you can stiffen it a bit with 2x4s, then even put some insulation between those.
On the open side (ya gotta have one so's you can roll your truck back 'n' forth) you can make a couple panels to fit, and hinge 'em to the 4x4 studs on
those corners. Run an extension cord out to it, and maybe a little propane heater, and there ya go! Now you can work on your truck outside without worryin' too much about crap gettin' into the works.
I have done it outside, and the easiest way to keep crap out is to use a couple of old towels. Lay them across the deck and they will keep most things out. They will also prevent some of the moisture from getting into the cylinders. I wouldn't be leaving the engine open without spraying the cylinders and deck down with WD-40. That will prevent any moisture from getting at the open cylinder walls.
I've got my intake manifold open while I get ready for the carb swap. In the meantime, (since I'm trying to sell the old carb) I covered the carb flange on the intake with masking tape. Should be pretty easy to remove and seal well.
If a head was removed and was going to be that way for a day or two, I'd cover the area with saran wrap and tape the edges.
