my k5 still has the tires i bought it with, a few years ago. i'm not sure of their age. they have pleny of tread left, but the sidewalls have hairline cracks all the way around, and a few slightly larger cracks. all my other vehicles get the tread worn off long before anything else has a chance to wear out, but the k5 is not my dd.

i can't take pics, at the moment (working hard, at the office. ha) but does anyone have a general suggestion about how much crack is ok? i want slightly bigger tires, anyway, for looks and a bigger footprint, but i don't want to drop the money if these have a good amount of time left.
 
dry rotted tires.. i run bias ply dry rotted tires somtimes.. i always carry a spare.. but never had one blow out.. although large chunks of tread have ripped off them at one time.

yeah, i realized the cracks were probably dry-rot, but i'm just not sure how much is too much. i have to put a lot of highway miles on them for each significant offroad trip. 400 miles, roundtrip in a single day, last time.
 
see if its BIAS PLY and see how many plys.. it should be on the sidewall.. i wouldnt be worried if they are bias with 4 or more plys.

Can you stick something in them to see how deep they are? BEWARE if it is a sharp object it could poke a hole in the tire. If they are deep you could also ruin the tire by doing this, but if that happens they were junk anyway. Measure how wide they are and reply back to us. Can you get picks?

can't get the pics until i'm home from work, tonight. i know they'd help a lot, but i'm doing payroll (boooring) with one hand and surfing ck5 with the other, at the moment.

off the top of my head, i'm pretty certain they are radials, not bias ply. general grabber st. not even all-terrain, but they've done a nice job offroad. the tread is more aggressive than my friend's procomp ATs. but, i would like bigger voids for mud.

i'll try to find somthing to cram in there and figure out depth and width.
 
I wouldn't cram anything in there, I would gently put it in and don't push too hard.

lol. i didn't plan to use a nail and the bfh on it. i was thinking feeler gauge. fairly blunt and gives more than a guess about thickness.

i wish i had a bfh right here. i'd bonk myself in the head and when i woke up, the crappy work day would be over. anyway, back to it.....

here's just one tire. big pics for detail, but they were even bigger. the biggest crack i found was about 1/16" wide.

i have a tire shop and i would never sell a tire like that under any cicumstsances, i would advise you to run em easy or not at all, 2 ply sidewall is not in your favor. if i saw those i would guess they were from the late 90's.
