I put a new battery in it & it still has same issue. Could it be my starter solenoid that I believe has been cooked by headers to close with crappy little heat shield ?

Unless you messed with the timing, I’d double check the battery charge and the starter. They can test it at the auto parts store

There was a thread on this site somewhere in that last week about mini starters. Highly recommend if you need to replace that one

Check the grounds. I can not tell you how many times I have dealt with this. I do not mean just look at them. Remove and clean. Battery to engine, engine to frame and frame to body. Also, the wire size of both feeds from the battery. The Fugly Duckling was cranking slow when I got it. 454 with a cam. Checked timing. It was good. Ground battery cable was to small. Went to 1/0 and it cranks like it should.

Second the suggestions already. Cables in good shape, connections all in good shape, and finally, if you need to replace even just the starter solenoid, IMO go to the mini starter. They don't need the same cable size as the early starters, they aren't as hard on the battery, and they just work better.

I’ve had blazer for 6 months & it done this from the gate, nope I’ve never touched anything, yet !

I’ll check all cables first, but I’m pretty sure I’m gonna have to replace starter too. My closest auto parts store is 75 miles away, probably just go thru Summit, as long as I can get one made in USA .Thank y’all for input !!

Yes check the timing it is an unknown. Might save a 75 mile trip to parts store.

That is the first thing that came to my mind was timing too advanced.
Nope I haven’t messed with timing, but doesn’t mean the guy I bought Blazer from had it correct either. It’s on my list of thing to check out. Never timed a TBI engine nor have I ever had one. I’ll have to look into how to do it correctly.

So there is a connector near the dist at the firewall. Disconnect this to disable the computer from adjusting the timing. 4° to 6° is correct for a stock TBI system.

Yeah, if it’s acted like this since you bought it, timing is the first thing I’d check.

I was thinking it was 0*? IIRC it will be on the core support emissions sticker, regardless.

So since it only has headers and no engine mods that I know of. I believe it is still considered stock , correct ? After it does fire up motor runs good & seems to have quick acceleration ,but I will still check timing. Talked to A.parts store and Chevy dlrshp. & they informed me my model yr. Blzr. had 8 different starters, ???? So I guess pull it & match it, don’t know bout mini starter.

0 degrees is where I set my TBI truck. It is hard to get it at exactly 0 degrees because as you tighten the distributor down it rotates it a tiny amount advanced. If mine is 1 degree advanced after tightening the distributor that is close enough.

0 is probably correct oem timing.
When I was messing with tbi they were new, I was young and wanted more. I probably set every one I ever worked on at 4.
They were passing CA emissions then as well. Maybe not now they keep moving the line.
