crate motor issues

put a chevy crate motor in the Jimmy, thought I did break in right etc. etc. it starts popping and running horrible, so I'm looking for timing issues. I set timming and it runs fine and then goes to hell and starts popping really bad under load.

I pull the valve cover to go back and retrace steps to find TDC and I find this thin little corkscrew spring like wire in there.

Is this normal for a crate motor to make stuff like that or did I f-up my cam and have to tear it apart???

ideas?

Sounds like a broken dampner spring. Possibly even a broken valve spring that wound itself up. Get a pic of this piece for me.

no really small like a metal shaving off a lathe...

I'll try and get a picture in the morning...

never found the shaving... it's some where in the driveway, but I did an oil change and no more shavings were found, I even pout a magnet in the oil pan and prodded around, no more shavings. I pulled the plugs and they weere pretty fouled so changed those and the fuel filter shot the timing and it runs like a champ again.

The combination of having the truck running really bad and Rick the IT guy at work who does Demo-Derby and racing on the side being in my ear chanting the cam is bad the cam is bad and me not having any time to wrench on the truck for the last 7-8 weeks had me convinced that something was horribly wrong. It's not, and I'm glad cause I have a pile of new parts to go on the truck and more on the way!

i put the 330 horse crate in my rig about 2 years ago, and i was very concerned about break-in. I called chevy and they told me because these motors are hot tested there is no break-in. install it and go for it. I did and have never had any issues.

As a machinist for the last 25 years it sure sounds like you found a metal chip from the mill work done on the heads.IMO

I feel so much better having it start right up today. I have a fixed budget and very limited time for the build and tearing into it to do a cam would have been a serious set back.

Good news is I have a new 6" lift on the way from ORD. Now hopefully I can find some time to get it on.:haha:and install the lift...
