Crazy exhaust theory I have... Is it plausible or, am I stupid?

I forget, did they give a pressure reading on those test?

I remember the important part being straight through or close was better everywhere, and more important if size was decreasing or power increased. Mine are right at the point it may not make enough difference to change

I can't remember, that might have been the carb size testing they did.

The muffler shootout was pretty predictable in some ways, and proved that there is a lot of hocus pocus marketing BS with muffler claims. I purchased some stainless 3" Cherry Bomb Salutes for the '57. IIRC they not only didn't kill any power, they actually gained a couple over headers with collector extensions. They're not quiet though, at all, not even a little. Maybe a little quieter than open headers...

"Best" muffler needs to be qualified every time. What is the application, what are the most important factors and what is it trying to muffle...

For my 57, I chose based on what made the best power on the dyno and sounded good and nasty. I wouldn't choose these for my wife's Durango.

If I had my truck out on the trail, it wouldn't be bothersome at all. The 50's do ok in that regard. I can cruise through town relatively quiet. And at 55, it's really not horrible. But who can drive 55 for a long distance lol. When you get to 60 it's bad, and all the accelerations coming out of corners and all that.
The wife and I did a recent interstate run for the hell of it, and I cruised at 75-95 for about 15 minutes...... THAT was brutal lol. And probably what made us both shy away from the wheeling trip last week.

I have to redo from the cab back after I shorten my truck. At that time it'll go all the way out and 45 to the side near the corners of the bumper.
The pipe will for the most part be straight the entire distance. I think I'm going to attempt my theory test then. Because I'm curious as to what it would sound like now lol.

I have flow master delta flow 50's now.
And it's just too damn loud still. And they're supposed to be quiet according to their scale.
I was looking at mufflers, and there really is t chit out there for a center in, center out, 3' muffler. There's a bunch but they are all a version of glass pack, or some sort of chambered just like what I have.

I like a good loud hotrod. And for the most part in town I love the sound of my truck.
But highway cruising sucks. It's not a droning... It's just fuggin loud.

I have like 3 straight sections all big enough to throw a glass pack in. And I'm half tempted to buy the cheapest ones I can on Amazon or something and try it :dunno:

I was going to try the 70 series BB ones from FM. But I e heard quiet vids and ones where they are loud. So I'm having a hard time trusting I'll like it after a $400 purchase.
You could easily add a glasspack like you said and it would act just like a resonator to help quiet it down a little.

Kaleco Auto offers the only truly silent exhaust solution.

Current setup, immediately after cold start. 4-5 cold days of sitting.

Chit... Tried Posting a vid... I'll have to wait till I get home

also i have found a single muffler is better than 2 mufflers . . . in reports on forums and my self in person . 2 in and 1 or 2 out on 1 muffler helps a lot .

my old 96 c3500 crew cab long bed 5.7L vortec i did 2 delta flow 50 series fm mufflers ...... then few years later rusted out and scored a deal from a friend on a 50 delta flow 2 in and 2 out muffler . and WOW what a difference also in this combo . so much less cabin noise / droan .

Any chance that while the engine is under load some part of the exhaust system is touching the frame or body?

It touching the frame, and the box I guess. Not the cab.

So fix that and see how much quieter it is. I've noticed the noise going way up when ice forms between the pipe and the body. Make sure the hangers have some form of isolation in them.

My crew cab runs a 454, headers, 3in duals (with an h-pipe however) to Flowmaster 40's with 2.5" tailpipes that go all the way to the bumper. I've been told by all kinds of folks that it's loud when they follow it, but it's very reasonable in the cab. You can have a conversation at interstate speeds, no problem.

I'm definitely a believer in full length exhaust that doesn't point down at the exit.
