Ok this is about the BBC 366T. Everyone that I know that had this motor replaced it with a 350 SB. So this got me thinking.

The 366 is a tall block with very thick cylinder wall thickness, and a stroke of 3.75 inches. After a max bore, and a 454 crank it would be a 402.

So I'm trying to figure out if it would be worth building one cheep for two reasons.
1-to be different
2-just to see what it could do

Been thinking of what the difference would be between a bb 402, and a sb 402.

Any ideas on this?

If the stroke was left at 3.75" it'd have the same stroke as the 400 small block, so not sure you'd see any difference.

I have heard the 427 Tall Deck blocks were what was used to build the 540" big blocks before aftermarket blocks were readily available. I'd think being a Tall deck big block you could get much more than 402" out of a 366 TD.

I can tell you one thing for sure, plan on spending lots of money to do this as you'll need different connecting rods, pushrods, tall deck intake or regular intake with spacers.

The 366t has a bore of 3.935" and can be bored .125" over because of the thicker wall. And the stock is 3.76".
So with a 4.06 bore and a 4.0" stroke it should look like this.........
414 (cid)= 4.06(bore)x4.06(bore)x4.0(stroke)x.7854x8(# of cylinders)

So that would be the max unless I use a stroker crank. But then that would be more $ then I would want to spend on a crazy 366t motor idea. lol

I was doing some reading on it. Thinking the biggest $ would be in the pistons, since the piston pin height would need to be right. Otherwise I could use a stock 454 crank and connecting rods, even used just to try it out.

I would use all the stock stuff over again. just get the 454 crank and rods. Then a mild cam. I would look for a set of GM performance heads, or a deal on aftermarket. But if nothing was around, I need to learn to port sooner or later.:D

Now this is just a idea, something to keep the mind thinking. I was going all out on building a 383, but lost interest after talking to alot of people that had them. Not that they are bad, just alot of people had them. So then I got my dually, with the 454 in her. Now I'm thinking a BB for the blue blazer (motor will only last another year or two). And I want it to be different. So I'm digging all the input on this, thanks.

A 454 crank will not swing in a 366T block. All BBC connecting rods are the same with the exception of the HP "dimple" rods which have 7/16" rod bolts. There is a .400" difference in deck height that needs to be made up and either longer rods or special pistons would need to be had in order to do this.

good to know. Like all the info. just a pipe dream as of yet.

Waste of good money. There is an optimum ratio of bore to stroke and you may end up way out on that, so research that some before going wild.

IIRC - and that is an if, a 1:1 ration is optimum - like 4" stroke to 4" bore. I believe this was for racing tho. Torque may need something else.

Either way you will spend more money to get were you want to be than if you junked that block and bought a 427 or 454 - unless you wanted a 540 and if that block can be used for that. That would be something to shoot for. If you want to be in the range of those that are out there, then just get one that exists already.

Sorry to change the subject for a second but i've never heard of a 366T. Just a small BB?? I mean i thought i knew all about chevy motors but apparently not cause i can't recall ever hearing of one. Thanks again

The "T" stands for tall deck. It is the smallest bore BBC but with a .400" taller deck than a regular BBC. There is also a 427T or tall deck if you will. All 366's were tall deck engines but the 427 came in both a standard deck and a tall deck version.

The 366t came in the 2 ton trucks and school buses. Most the bus owners around here pulled them out and put sb 350's in. They are still put in alot of chipper/bucket trucks for large tree co.

Just trying to find something different to do. Didn't get a block, and now thinking i will not. sick of the same old 350,355,383,454 in every truck built. Wanted to see the looks of people when you tell them it's just a 414ci bbc. I'll get another year out of my motor so I'm in no rush.

how abt 283,305,307,348?,402. all of those odd numbers of engine that i have seen or heard of over the years. except for 283 305 307 i have seen alot of them. 402 is rare. but i think i have heard of 348?? maybe the numbers are wrong, but something like that that is related to chevy. as matter of fact get a 250 or 292 I6 and build it to be a racing motor. and u will amaze people if a straight 6 smokes a v8:D god im a dork arent i?

In the past two years Hot Rod mag. has done alot on straight 6 builds. You can get some good numbers from them. Not for the blue blazer though, but i did find anouther '89 that needs some love. Would be a better trail rig that a street ride. So I might pass on it, or pick it up to save for later.

If you want something much different then how about the chevy 409. This engine was designed for trucks way back in the day. I've personally never seen a 409 in a truck but they did come in impalas back in the late 50's early 60's. They have a very distinct valve cover shape and you would definately have the cool factor going on.

From 69-72 they did make a 402 bb, 4.125 bore and 3.76 stroke

different..
:D

modern junkyard 6.0 with an eldelbork intake to bolt on a carb and msd control box.. and suprise surprise..it aint a million bucks!

power..higher rpms...aluminum heads..
