I have a 1994 suburban and today it started making a noise that sounded like a wheel hub going out but its from the middle of the truck the transmission does not seem to be slipping ....could it be the four wheel drive? It still works in four wheel. Please help idk what it could be...and it has new u joints all say round....please help.

Does the noise change when in 4wd, or does it stay consistent whether in 2 or 4, how about low range.

I have a one piece shaft. So not drive shaft carrier bearing. Um its worse in 1 than in drive and its worse in 4 wheel low.....I drove it home from work at 55-60 and did not heard it but u can at low speeds. Idk what it is I need this truck to work its only one running well blazer has a short. Could it be a flywheel or torque converter?

Depending on noise it could be the flex plate yes.

idk??? I must be getting old. we aren't texting here are we??? I mean OMG, WTF! You might need to gutt (get under the truck) and cflp (check for loose parts)

seriously tho, take a friend with you on a test ride and find a place where you can safely duplicat the problem and have the co pilot look and listen. You could also safely jack up the rear wheels and put it in gear and have someone look and listen while you try to duplicate the sitution that makes the sound.

Or just keep driving it and eventually the problem will eventually get bad enough that there will be no doubt whats wrong. I don't recomend that though.

Center of the truck:

Check U joints
Check Tcase/tranny mount
Check output bearing on tcase and input of rear

Give us more diagnostic info.

If it's worse in first gear/reverse and seems to go away in higher gears it may be the transmission planetary or input bearing. This is pretty common on the 700R4/4L60E.

The Guy at the transmission shop said he thought it was the planetary gear....it is bad to drive it? He also said transmission will have to be rebuilt ......1500 bucks

It is bad, you should not drive it or you will be stranded eventually and cause further more expensive damage, his price seems very fair considering it will no doubt need a gear train.

$1500 for a 700r4 seems ridiculous to me... Youd be light years ahead finding a trans that doesnt need a specific non service part and having that rebuilt. 700r4 should be out, rebuilt, and in for $700-$900. $500-$700 if you bring them the trans out.

Seriously? Removing a four wheel drive 4L60E, building it, replacing the gear train, all of the contaminated internal electronics, any upgrades and a torque converter, flushing the trans cooler system, reinstalling with fluids, over 14 hours labor plus parts. Same job, done right, on the bench about 10 hours plus parts and torque converter. I can't see how that could add up to anything less than $1500 unless it was being done in a Malaysian sweat shop.:dunno:

Granted yeah I'll give you another 100 or 150 for the transfer case but I had my Camaros 700r4 pulled, redone, and reinstalled for $750

:dunno:

But like I said skipping the replacement of the gear train would require picking up a good core trans.

I does not seem to be that bad. How would it do more damage long as the gear does not break I thought it would be ok to drive on. The transmission Guy said he would not sweat it just if it gets worse then to bringbit to him...can I do anything to help it till I get the money to fix it?

If the noise you are hearing is a planetary bearing, and your trans guy confirms that this is what he thinks it is, then those fragmenting bearing parts will begin to come out of the bearing races and get in between the planetary pinion gears and sun gear/ring gear in short order. Those gears run in such close tolerence to each other that any hard steel foriegn object, such a small needle bearing for instance, will break away the gear edge and possibly split the ring gear. Add to this, the fact that this input planetary and gears are located inside of the input clutch drum, shedding all that metal in between the clutch plates. That is why it may be less expensive to park it for a little bit before further damage occurs and you are on the hook for a more expensive repair. If, as Stomis suggested, you could find a better unit to rebuild cheap enough it may be worth it to have that one built as you try and buy some time, but then you are out the cost of a core that only fits 1993-1994 4 wheel drive 1/2 tons, which may be hard to find, but still it is an option.
