I was reading a tech artical on this site and it said you need a 2wd steering box. can you use just the arm off of it?and put it on the 4wd box.

this is the rig.
76 K-5 6in lift 400/350/203/D60/14ff/38.5 boggers

You can use the sector shaft from the 2wd drive box and put it in your 4wd box. Most people use a different arm, like superlift #1104 or a heep arm.

gm 2x4 box has shaft with full splines and 4 key way tabs. 4x4 box has 1/4 splines and grouve for pinch bolt. the 2 are not at all compatable. and second is the 2x4 box turns left to right. the 4x4 box is the oposit direction of movement.

One word of advice would be, when you go to a JY to get your 2wd steering. If it is a pick and pull I would just grab the sector shaft as long as your steering box is good. I ended up buying the whole steering box and not it sits in the garage un-used. You could save some dough just yanking the sector shaft out......

Yes the sector shaft can be removed from a 2 wheel drive box and installed in a 4 wheel drive box. The only difference is the part that is splined for the arm. The 2 wheel drive factory arm is not needed as you will have to replace that. So just get you a sector shaft out of the 2 wheel drive box. You can swap them with the box installed on the frame. If you want to swap boxes then make sure the fittings are the same for the PS system as there are two systems there depending on year.
