I have a 71 Blazer and am looking to buy a crossover steering setup. I plan on putting 73-87 8 inch springs on with a zerorate to achieve 9 inches.

There is a guy who is selling his crossover steering components brand new and was wondering what I might have to do to fit up on my 9 inch susp.

It was going on his blazer with 4-6" of lift. The only used parts are the bolt on steering box brace, 2wd GM steering box and the knuckles. The steering arm, pitman arm, drag link and ends, bolt on steering brace were all purchased from off road design. The knuckles came off a 74 chevy 3/4 ton 4x4 dana 44 axle. The ball joints are brand new still in the boxes and will need to be pressed into the knuckles. The steering box came out of a mid 80's chevy 2wd truck that was being parted out.
Brand new never installed pitman arm ($70 new), steering arm ($130 new), steering arm studs, nuts, cone washers($30 new), drag link ($95 new), drag link ends ($95 new),ball joints for knuckles ($200 new), bolt on steering box brace ($130 new), driver side and passenger side knuckles, passenger side is flat top that has been machined, drilled, tapped and studs installed ( knuckles and machining $200), 2wd GM steering box ($50). he is asking $650 O.B.O.

So.. what would I need to change to accommodate a 9 inch lift? or would I be better off buying new from ORD.

Any comments/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Brandon

uh oh... it is going to be tall... but, no wheeling for me :( im spending all this time taking the rust out... its going to be my lifted classic! KEEP 'er CLEAN! got a 87 for the wheelin tho!

Ah i feel you i just picked up an 84 swb that im not sure what its purpose is yet.

You do realize that 2nd Gen (73-91) front springs are longer than 1st Gen (69-72) front springs and you would have to relocate possibly both the front spring mount and possibly even the rear upper frame bracket to use the 2nd Gen springs?

uh oh? just jokin. read a thread on a guy who has longer shackle in the rear on the front springs. he said worked just fine! thats what I hopin for! 73-87 springs on the 67 72. said had no problems and i believe the zero rates would help locate the axle back to the correct spot.

I sure hope that works!:waytogo:

I am not sure the steering boxes are the same for first and second gen. I know the braces are different, or are these parts coming off a first gen?

if its all first gen to first gen then everything else should work with the draglink length being the only questionable thing. I am not sure how much extra length is going to be required for the additional suspension height.

The axle stuff is all the same regardless of truck.

Quick check would be to measure from where the pitman arm will connect to where the steering arm will connect then measure the draglink.

Thanks MT. Parts are coming off 84.

When I saw the Readers Rig of the Month (your pic, and NICE blazer BTW) I could have sworn up and down that scenery was from the Pacific Northwest. Nice pic!

Good info... I'll do that!

The steering box will be O-ring style since it is 2nd design 1980-later, you'll need 1979-earlier box with flare fitting hoses.

steering shaft spline will be smaller. = time to upgrade to the jeep shaft.

flare fitting style for hoses diffrent. = new hoses easy.

need diffrent drag link tube for higher lift basicly. or possible a spacer block or better a new style arm with built in spacer to lift it off the knuckle. then sell your std hight 1. i got a friend that needs 1.

then not 100% sure on a 73-up box bolting to the 72-down frames.
