Hope I'm posting this in the right place
Anyway I've been reserching doing the hi-stear on my 79k5. I am puting a corp 10 and 14 bolt on it with some six inch rancho's at the time.I've been told by a few people that going crossed over stearing with a beefy controle arm maybe a more reliable way to go.I'm fine with that
Problem Is I'd like to use a t-case doubler and run a dana60 in the future but paying $800 to $1000 for a d60 Isn't Possible at the time.
I dont want to put a bunch of time and money into machining the passengers side knuckle on my 10 bolt just to sell it in a 6mons to a year and have to buy d60 bracets. But I want to get the monster on the trails too

.....Is there another way to do the crossed over stearing on the 10 bolt without machining the PS knuckle??? (can I tie into the controll arm PS joint or something and it still be reliable)
I also got a 400sb I'm trying to trade for d60 or an 86 el camino but I'll try posting it in forsell.Yeah I can't post in the forsell area yet

THX

Although the OEM's have done it on some models , no one here would recommend that .So Just do it the right way .

However those parts still demand a decent enough resale value , so you can recoup some money later when you go Dana 60 .

definately dont compomise yours and everyones safety by rigging a steering system. do it right the first time with the dana 44 flattop knuckles.

Umm, the $100-150 you'll put into the knuckle is nothing compared to the arm, tie rod, draglink, etc ... which you gotta do no matter what, so yeah, do it right.

so who sells flat top ps knuckles; can you buy them new or only used?
seems like everybody is looking for the old ones

Crane has them on sale right now. Check them out if you want a brand new casting already setup for crossover and by BOTH sides.

Definately dont comprimise. Hossbaby and several others here saved my bacon when my crossover was rigged, (Steering arm was welded on) on a trail run. thankfully I wasn't going fast and I didn't lose steering at a bad time. Now its done right. Also it is a 3/4 ton 10 bolt with upgraded shafts, welded front and new steering arms that are bolted on properly.

My avatar is probably when I broke the weld loose.

When I did crossover on my old 10 bolt, I got this kit from WFO Concepts:
http://wfoconcepts.com/Steering/Dana44/CrossoverKit.html

The entire kit, with knuckle (limited availability) pre-machined & ready to go is $550, and has everything you need except the 2wd box. I went with a junkyard 2wd steering sector shaft from a friend for $0. The kit is great, I'm still using it now after I've upgraded to a D60 (just swapped out steering arm) and added hydro-assist.

Like others said - don't half-ass the steering, your life and the life of everyone around you is not worth the couple hundred dollars you might safe. If you can't afford to do crossover right, keep the stock-style steering in tact

One more chime in on do the steering right. Even done right you can have problems, I was running a spacer block (its raises the drag link on a stock steering setup) on mine and would break the studs. Company I bought it from said it would be fine but I broke them enough to carry two spares with me.

Look around on here or on ebay you can do it right and still do it cheap we did a buddys ramcharger for about 160. Got the steering arm off ebay the flat top knuckle from a wrecking yard used, local machine shop tapped the knuckle, kinda cheap tie rod ends, the tube to make the drag link was the most expensive part

Yep, spacer blocks are a no no. I learned that the hard way too. The steering arm and spacer block need to be machined as one piece not 2 seperate pieces and if at all possible you should use standard length studs.
