Crossmember placement

Actually the rails are “deeper”. The top of the rail is the same otherwise it would raise the cab, the additional material is on the bottom that’s why the crossmember goes inside the frame.

Splitting hairs, I know - sorry.

Would it improve pinion angle if it was sitting inside the frame rails?

I'm contemplating above or below the frame rail right now as well.
If you mounted it above the frame rail it would help your front driveline angle and hurt your rear angle. Mounting above the rail which is slightly higher than an under mount basically points the rear of the transfer case upward and the front of the transfer case goes down. It is easier to adjust the rear pinion angle upwards with shims instead of the front pinion angle. If you need to adjust the front pinion angle too much you will mess up your steering caster. Then you would have to cut and turn your steering knuckles.

I moved it inside, it's a one ton and others said it should be inside, it improved my rear driveshaft angle, everything sits at a better angle now.

WHAT?

ive never seen these inside the frame rails. thats a thing? ive even seen, and had, and had to make spacers 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick to lower them further to fix rear driveline issues with a mild lift...

-edit- comparatively, putting that inside the frame rail would have the transmission/transfercase an inch and a half higher up into the body of the truck - there is clearance for this???

see @obijuank5 comment about the cross member. I had tons of room under the transmission tunnel to move to up. @cheavyk10 can confirm.

It's a 1-ton frame thing. Us guys with half tons it will never work
