So the guy that owned my suburban before the guy I got it from, called me and told me he has a 2wd box with a drop arm, and that if I get a tie rod from a heep of some sort, i could have crossover... be this the truth?

You could ... after swapping knuckles and steering arms and tierod and going to the sideways draglink (instead of long-ways) ... the latter then wants to cuddle with the motor crossmember, unless you get a bent draglink, which is annoyingly hard to adjust.
Anyway, sure, the 2WD box is one piece of the crossover puzzle, but there's lots more. You could do the Y-link thing, likely simpler -- lotsa options.
