i have long studs on my passanger side nuckle (about 5" long) and i was thinking about getting a spacer block. now what good does longer studs do and why not just use the steering arm aginst the nuckle? what is the advantage of using longer studs and the spacer?
 
It's better to use just the steering arm by itself and not the spacer. If you need the extra height, there are "tall" steering arms you can buy to give you extra clearance. I myself have the one from sky manufacturing (D44)
 
oh ok so the only advantage is getting extra height if i need it? i dont think i will need it but i may.
 
Im running 52's in the front with a zero rate and my draglink hits the springs when flexed all the way. I'm running the tall arm as said before. Hope this helps.
 
yea im running 56s up front with a zero rate so yea i probably will need a block. how big of a spacer are you using? oh your not right? so i should be good with a 1 or 1 1/2 block?
 
Im not running a spacer, just a "tall" steering arm. It would actually be OK if I got some bumpstops or limiting straps. As far as how big of one, It really varies from each vehicle. My springs are pretty wore out and dont have much arch to them.
 
The part where it mounts to the knuckle is just thicker than normal. All the Dana 60 ones are pretty tall to begin with. I don't think they make a "raised" arm for a 60. I have 52's and a 0-rate on my 60 with Sky's arm and no clearance issues.

That's the exact same arm that I have. Sky Manufacturing
 
so i decided im going to run a spacer between the nuckle and my steering arm, is there any reason i cant just use a piece of box tubing? just drill out the three holes. i would most likly use some 2x2 box tubing... any reason why not?

Well the main reason would be SAFETY! Come on man its steering :rolleyes: People sheer studs with the proper spacer in there. Its the clamping effect that keeps the steering arm from coming loose. Using a piece of tubing the holes will wallow out and sheer the studs then you have no steering.

Seriously get the spacer or the tall arm. It's not that much extra $$ I think I have a 1/2" spacer at home. I'll try and remember to look this weekend. I'll send it to you if 1/2" will work.
 
Yeah, a spacer isn't the best option, but i only run in the mud so it works for me. Plus i also got the ARP stud kit from Parts Mike at the same time just in case.
 
yea ur right i should just buy one.. but its like $80 bucks at WFO and around that at ORD i think. that would be great if you had one maybe i could buy it from you.

If you don't already have the arm I would get the raised arm from Sky that I posted above. Its a better option that the spacer under the short arm. I'll check for the spacer, but its only 1/2" so it may not give you enough clearance.
