I've heard that when going with crossover steering your should replace the steering box with the same era 2wd version. Is that really nessesary? whats the advantages or disadvantages?

You have to either replace the entire box or just the sector shaft. No advantage or disadvantage, just the way it has to be done.

Because the pitman arm needs to be indexed differently and the 4WD pitman arm cannot be indexed differently but the 2WD can.

ok, I've always heard and just accepted this but never knew why...

Thanks!

If your box is in good condition (little play and no leaks) just change the sector shaft. Easy job.
