I just bought one off EBay, $20. It looks decent. Fixed me right up. Fishing the wire down through the column is a pain. But once you get it through easy fix. You will need some SOLID wire to use as a fish tape.
I always just yanked them off cars in the wrecking yard. Astros, cars, trucks, all used them up into the 90's, so ones in good condition can be found fairly easily, especially since all the stolen ones already have broken columns that are worthless for resale complete.
You bring up a good point...if the truck doesn't already have it, if you find the right donor (apparently late 80's+?) the stalk will have a connector right at the top of the column there. You could always splice in the newer style with connector, or if you did want to dig into it, change the wiring down the column too. Either way, it's easier with the plug at the top of the column.
