I'm putting my D44 back together for the first time (after I tore it apart for the first time) and I ran into a problem after I put it all back together and my buddy was checking it. No crush sleeve on the pinion:doah: . I put it back together the way everything came off and I guess there wasn't a crush sleeve on it to begin with when I bought it. So went to Oreilly and got what they told me was the crush sleeve and I'm wondering if this is right and how to check it. Any help for my noob butt would be appreciated. Thanks

in my rear end class we went through a few of those to get the pinion depth right. it took a 4ft ratchet to get the job done cause it took 200+ ftlb. and you just keep spining the pinion and tightening it till it has the right resistance. it sucks cause if you have the wrong shims you need to do the whole thing again and you wont know if you have the wrong shims in it till you get the ring gear in and do a pattern check.

thats how i was told. good luck

Well I got the shims that where on the pinion but I was told it needed a crush sleeve on it:confused: ? I had the shims on it when I put it all together the first time but the pinion would lock down if you tightened it very much at all is that normal? I mean I put it all together the way it came off and it didn't have a crush sleeve on it :dunno:

hmm... now im having second thoughts on the crush sleeve. i no removable style like the 9in uses a crush sleeve. but now im not sure about the integral like d44. i still want to say it does. shims before rear pinion bearing

yeah i just checked some of my notes, shims are in place of a crush sleeve. so if you can't spin it maybe the bearing is bad and you should check it. or your going to tight.

Some Later model D44s and i think the littel 30's and such in Jeeps May use a crush Sleeve. ALL GM axels , 10, 12, 14 bolts all use crush sleeves. but the D44's and D60s used in Straight axel GM trucks used shims to set pinion preload. No crush sleeve was used for Dana Axels in GM trucks. Even on Foad diagrams that Id a crush sleeve, the diagram acctually shows shims.

BTW heres teh dana Manual http://www2.dana.com/pdf/5310-3.PDF

i just did a 9" and it had a crush sleeve. and on dana or any other axle you need to make sure the turning tourque is correct.

this will help you.

Application In. (mm)
Ring Gear Backlash .005-.008 (.13-.20)
Side Bearing Preload .008 (.20) INCH Lbs. (N.m)
Pinion Bearing Preload
7 1/2" Ring Gear
Used Bearings 8-12 (1.0-1.4)
New Bearings 24-32 (2.7-3.6)
8 1/2" Ring Gear
Used Bearings 5-10 (.6-1.13)
New Bearings 15-30 (1.7-3.4)
9 1/2" Ring Gear
Used Bearings 5-15 (.6-1.7)
New Bearings 20-25 (2.3-2.8)

but before you test the turning torque of the pinion and ring gear i think the pinion alone should be like 1-5 inlb or something like that.

I've replaced all the bearings (both carrier, pinion). I just torqued it too much. I've got it all back together now with the shims. I don't know much about how to check backlash and preload cuz i've never done it before but one of my friends is a GM master mechanic and I talked him into coming over and checking my work. Hopefully it's all good.

Most dana axles use shims instead of crush sleeves. Its not based on model: i.e. there are crush sleeve dana 60's, but most use shims.

AFAIK, all of the GM corporate axles (10, 12, and 14 bolt) use crush sleeves.

Shims are better than crush sleeves, other than they take a little longer to setup.

yeah when i did crush sleeves it was a pain sometimes cause on certain models you have to recrush it to get the proper pinion depth.
