...now has my money. I just ordered the following for my burb:

-a pair of Polk db 4"x6" plate speakers for the dash

-a set of Polk db 6-1/2" components for the rear passenger doors (I'm gonna put the tweeters where the ashtrays are in the doors)

-a Pioneer DEH-P4000UB head unit with CD/USB/AUX/HD-ready/Sat-ready
p130DEHP40-f_mt.jpeg

-an Alpine PDX-5 amp. This should be one sweet little amp - it's got 75Wx4 that'll power the dash/door speakers, plus a mono 300W channel for my sub that I've already got (Polk db 10"). All that plus it's only 10-3/16"W x 2-1/2"H x 8-7/8"D

The plan for now is to just disconnect the rear roof 4x10's. I rarely even have the third-row seat in (hence no passengers back there), and I'll see how it sounds without em. I'd welcome any input from someone else who's taken this same approach with those lame-o 4x10's back there...

Well, lessee, the 4x6's are half price ($50) when added to the cart.
The 6-1/2" components are no ripoff (less than alot of other dealers, actually).
I could save $35-40 on the Pioneer if I tried elsewhere, but it's reasonable in my book.
I get a free dash kit/adapter, speaker brackets, harnesses, and antenna adapter.
You can't find a better price on the Kenwood amp right now (it's a brand new product - not actually in stock quite yet).

Shipping is free, and I get the stuff in two days.

I don't do e-bay.

I've also dealt with Crutchfield in the past and am more than happy with their service.

I am not in the habit of getting ripped off.

Sounds good. Most of the stuff i get can be had cheaper elsewhere, but glad you checked. Then again, the places i order from have crappy customer service.

Can't wait to see your install.
Its not too hard to put 5x7's in the rear ceiling if you want speakers back there later, i did a crappy writeup when i was 16 over on cardomain. Basically you just cut out the plates and bolt them in. I think i used 1/4" plastic as a spacer, but don't think i needed it.

Is this going in a '94 Suburban? If so, I guess the interior was a little different than my '99. I put seperates in the front doors and then seperates with the tweeter mounted on top of the mid-driver in the 2nd row doors. Not having the rear 4x10s hooked up didn't make any difference in terms of sound. If you don't have speakers in the 2nd row doors then you might end up wanting the 4x10s hooked up. If this isn't in a suburban ignore everything I wrote.:haha:

Ok, I just re-read your post. Looks like you are going to use the seperates in the rear passenger doors? I think you might end up finding that your soundfield might not end up being that great if you are relying on the smaller plate speakers up front as your front stage, and the better sounding seperates as your rear fill. I would suggest you think about using the seperates in the front doors and get some coaxials for the 2nd row seats (I have the Polk MOMO series 6.5" with the adjustable tweeters in the back of my K5 and they sound great). You could still use the plate speakers in the front, but that size speaker just never really sounds that great. It will probably be OK, but not nearly as good as using the seperates in the door.

I'll be interested in knowing how it all sounds. I have started thinking about a doing something with my '90. And I have ordered from Crutchfield several times with absolutely no problem at all. Great site.

I'll be sure and let y'all know how it turns out. I just gotta find time and a place to do the install - I don't want to do it in the parking lot at the condo complex here and advertise it's presence.

The 6-1/2" components have adjustable tweeters, so I can tone the highs down in the back if need be. Butcher, I share your concern, but I don't want to mess with the stock placement unless necessary. I do know that the 4x6 plates sound much, much better than the 4x6 ovals - very good mids, actually.

One downside - the amp is still not out from Alpine yet (Alpine says they'll deliver the first week of March). I guess I'm willing to wait, though, for something that powerful and versatile in one small package. Until then, I'll run the speakers off the head unit.

I definitely think you should reconsider some of your planning here. The components are going to be wasted in the rear pass. doors. While those 4x6's are nice and a substantial upgrade from factory speakers they will not come even close to giving a decent front stage. The components would be best utilized in the front somehow, either some kick panels or even in the door with maybe the tweets up in the a-pillars. The coax types would be sufficient for the rear passengers, won't notice them too much from the front seats anyway if your front stage is setup how it should be.
Yes, Crutchfield is not the cheapest source for gear but if you want cust. service they are pretty hard to beat. Try returning a product to an ebay seller b/c it was damaged of wrong and see how well that turns out.

Well, I got it all dialed in tonight (finally)...and it sounds fantastic.

Sparkling highs, warm mids, and rich bass. I recommend this setup to anyone with a burb. The amp is the crown jewel of the system - it's a real sweet unit.

I'll post up some pics later.

so did you end up spending a grand on all this? how do those dash speakers sound ive been weary of them. im prob gonna drill out my door speaker holes and put some 6.5's in there with a tweeter. did you put any speakers in your front doors?

I tell ya what - it sounds pretty damned great. It's not a traditional setup, so to speak, but I used to be a sound guy and this does the trick for this model of Burb.

The fronts are troopers.

I recommend this setup wholeheartedly for a 94-95 Burb.
