So i am looking at buying a cucv military pickup and am wondering if they are good t0 have. How reliable are thoes desiels and what is the deal with the 24 volt systems, it seems like i heard that that is bad and people are switching them,??? Thanks guys

There are online tutorials for converting the 24v system to 12 volts. Its pretty simple and takes a few hours to do and its pretty cheap. As far as reliability, I think they are extremely reliable assuming you keep up with regularly scheduled maintanence(sp?) and keep all of the glow plug system in good working order.

SteelSoldiers.Com.

Mostly about restoration but lots of info and downloadable manuals. You can find out about 24v, how to change to 12v, and advantages of both.

nevermind. dont buy a cucv. You will probably want to do a few months of research before you jump into something like that. It can turn into a nightmare quickly if you are as clueless about diesels as you seem...No offense meant, just trying to save some confusion and frustration. There is alot of good information over on the steelsoldiers.com website, as well as www.dieselplace.com in the 6.2 section of the forum. Huge wealth of information. If I were in your place I would buy it, but I am a glutton for punishment.

They're like glow bugs, but they take electrons, and make them into orange light, which the diesel fuel sees, and flocks to, making little baby diesel explosions. :haha:

Read up on diesels ... and if you want one, get a civvy one. CUCV's are weird enough for those used to diesels; they've gottab e straaaange to the n00b.

I think you (The Mule) should get one.
And get some help to check the glow plugs, batteries, alternators and the starter then you will have a VERY reliable truck :wink1:
BTW I think it´s even more reliable with the 24volt system.
