I'm trying to find the brake code for a 1986 CUCV (M1008, M1010, M1028, or M1031). I tried the Chevrolet dealer and he's guessing at JB8, but his system doesn't go back that far for decoding the VIN. The build sheet in the glove box doesn't list the brake system. I'm leaning toward the JB8 code too, but would hate to order the wrong parts.

So is the brake code part of the VIN? If it is some of the online VIN decoders should do it, no?

If not, my parts manual breaks the VIN down. As a matter of fact I took pictures of those pages and linked them in a post on here, for a guy overseas that was trying to convince his DMV of something. I'll see if I can dig it up.

Here's the thread:

Hope it helps, I can't view the photos from here.

Duh, you're making it much too complicated.

If you're ordering parts, it's a 1-ton pickup, which means it has hydroboost.

It either has single rear wheels (more likely), or dual (rare). The duals are the 3.5" wide shoes; IIRC the singles are 2.5" wide shoes. Both are 13" drums IIRC.

That *should* be all your parts place needs to know to get you parts. What are you trying to get?

Dorian - Thanks for the decoder. I was able to use the weight rating and cross it to the correct code. JB8 it is!!!

dremu - I walked into three parts stores and tried to order a simple set of front pads for a 1986 K30 4wd. Each person said they HAD to have the RPO code.

That is retarded. Dana 60s only have 1 size of brakes for our vehicles. I would find a new parts house if I were you. I go to Kragen and tell them I have an 87 K30 with a diesel and I can get anything I want for my front axle. Hell I can use the same for my rear axle too.

It's sad, but a lot of these guys we have looking up the parts behind the counter can't find the parts we need if it's outside the the fields in the computer.
