I'm needing another engine for my 85 1008 CUCV. Looking for a low mileage pullout (complete). I've called Memphis and Boyce and of course, they have what I need. But are they're any other places to call ? and who is known as being the most trustworthy ? I hate to do the swap only to find out that the replacement wasn't a good one.

The only way to know if it is a good motor is to set it up to run in the crate before install. None of the surplus motors were labeled before they were auctioned. Some are used motors that ran good and were only pulled to replace with the 6.5L turbo. Others were blown up when pulled or had other issues.

Other than hearing it run, it's just taking a chance. I don't know any reputable place for used 6.2s. If they have any, a JY will let you bring it back if it's a bomb. Depending on price, could you buy a parts truck with a 6.2 that you knew was good and ran fine?

Memphis was 2800 bucks.
A grand higher than Boyce at about 1800. And I'm only 1.5 hours from Memphis and can pick it up. (no shipping)
For that price I'd be checking CL for a donor. Not sure in your part of the world but you see beaters with 6.2s all the time sub $1500 and there will be other parts to scavenge or part out to offset the cost.
I lucked out last year and picked up a 6.2 that I was able to see running in the truck before it was pulled. Came complete with accessories and a spare SM465. $500 solid deal. If nothing else just the spare IP alone makes up for having it kicking around. If I hadn't found that one though I probably would have ended up with a beat up C/K20 or 30 and sold of the axles etc and rest for scrap.
