Does anyone know the military truck model number for the 1 ton chevy 4x4 with the Radio / Communications shelter box on the back? Sometimes I think they were used as chevy truck ambulances also? Anyone know of any for sale? Anyone know of just the radio box itself for sale? I suddenly have the urge for one.

I think you mean the M1028, which is the uprated version of the M1008. IIRC the '28 just has bigger springs, i.e. is a high-GVWR K30, as opposed to the '08, which must be like a medium-GVWR civvy truck.

Technically a shelter would fit on either. There were a boatload of shelter versions, but varied I believe mostly by manufacturer, i.e. the dimensions were close, if not identical. (Donno how that works, though, as HMMWV's were used to carry them as well as CUCV's :dunno: )

Anyway, the shelter carrier doesn't have a separate M-number; just get a shelter and drop it into a pickup of choice ;)

Edit: like this ...

The M1028's were the ones specifically meant to carry the radio shelters in the bed.

M1010's were the ambulances that looked similar to the M1031 shop trucks. These were basically cab and chassis trucks, no beds.

Thanks everyone - The M1010 is the one I was looking for, I thought it was the com truck, but I guess it was primarily used as an ambulance. That box is what I'm looking to buy, I would consider a whole vehicle, but really only need the M1010 box. If anyone comes across one for sale let me know.

Has anyone owned one in the past or currently that can give me a measurement of how tall it is inside?

TheBird00 owns one. He's got some posts about it in the Diesel Forum on here.
