Just to note there were no Suburbans actually done under the CUCV program for the military. Those pictured are done after the fact by private folks. (Easy enough to do, as the CUCV's were basically off-the-shelf trucks with CARC paint and a whacked-out electrical system.) I had an M1009 (the Blazer CUCV), miss it sometimes (but don't miss the 24V, I mean 12V, I mean 24V electrical...)

You will find ex-service Suburbans, generally stripped-down models, but they were totally off-the-shelf and not CUCV-modified.

I have seen a couple of military Suburbans. They were armored and when the military was through with them they destroyed the body and scraped them. They would then sell the rolling chassis. They had a 454 with a Holley carburetor, TH400/208, 8 lug 10 bolt front and a full floating 10.5" 14 bolt. The rear springs had about 5 or 6 extra leafs and the front had 2 or 3 extra.

I'd like to see some documentation for this.

Especially...why a fuel sucking big block with a non-offroad friendly carburetor.

What would the armor be for? Thing wouldn't be any where near the front lines.

I doubt you will find any documentation on them. The military didn't want any of the body to leave the military. They removed the body and completely destroyed the entire body before they were sold for scrap. I doubt they were actually used for the regular military. I imagine they were used for hauling big shots around. Kind of like the secret service version of the military.

These things were extremely heavy. I imagine the 454 was swapped in because the 350 or 6.2 diesel would barely move it.

I have been parting out the GM military D30's for about 30 years and have only ever seen 2 of them and they would not let anyone have them until they removed the body.
