Cummins 4BT versions

Italessi,

Thank you very much for the info as well as the phone number. I am trying to get all of my parts and research gathered as much as possible and then I hope to start the project in the next week or two. I'm also really tempted to just sell the 6.2 and get a 4bt for the blazer... but I need to finish one project /forums/images/graemlins/hack.gif before I take on another. Thanks again and I'll definitely let you know if I need some more/better pics.

Tim

Tim,
Congratulations on getting the crew cab and the cummins. Let me know if I can help. I'm also in the market for a 6.2 /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

My engine is great in the fact it doesn't need electricals to run it.
Mechanical lift pump, injection pump, and the only reason I need electrical is for the starter and lights.

That is exactly what I love about my 6.2. /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

i went cummins as i have NO glow plugs. the motor has a electric fuel solonoid, which can be bypassed and i can uses a manual on/off cable, and the injector pump is set up for it.

EEEH, mine too.
Manual shutoff, and noooo glow plugs.
Maintenance is so easy.
Now I am looking at getting a new cummins 4bt from the factory, I have a lead in their plant. I hope to be able to afford it then it would be really nice.
Mine is getting tired and it's 67 vintage.

Geeze, and i was happy with my steady 22-24 mpg.

Now obviously I don't know your exact route, but according to Map Point it's 74.9 miles from Gulfport MS to Mobile AL, and another 188 miles to Denham Springs LA from Mobile. 262.9 miles total.

Your post claims 32 mpg, or 10.625 gallons for the whole trip. 262.9/10.625 = 24.744 mpg. That's actually close to what it says in your signature and seems more likely to me. Have you checked your odometer versus a GPS or anything else?

I'm just sitting here wondering how you could pick up another 8 mpg driving 10-15 mph slower. This isn't a flame or anything like that, hell 24+ mpg is already impressive as hell. /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

no problem. gps was calibrated for the speedo, and im within 1 mph at 70mph. odo is accurate too. i live in watson,la (north of denham) and it says 195 miles on mapquest to mobile, al, and it took me a little over 4 hours (4x 55mph= 220)
gulfport to mobile is 75. i ran 2 other errands (intertate)which should put me on the missing miles.

ill double check the odo today, and am going on another trip in 2 weeks. if im wrong ill post it. i dont mind the questioning.

my fuel curve puts me most efficent around 1600 or so.
70mph puts me at 2100rpm (i do not have a tach). 55mph puts me at 1700 rpm

in an attempt to NOT expound bad information ill definitly check it out. now you have me wondering. is it possible that the speedo is dead on and the ODO is off?? my michelins tape out to ABOUT 38" ( a hair less)

As far as I know if the speedo is accurate the odo has to be...but I could be wrong too. Measure the circumference of the tires and divide by pi to get the most accurate 'diameter'.

I do understand how much more efficiently a diesel will run at lower rpm's. I could pick up another 4-7 mpg with my 6.2 if I had an overdrive...currently cruise rpm is 2550, with an NV4500 it'd be 1863 rpm.

fronts are ALMOST 1/2" shorter than rear, due to weigh differences.

[/ QUOTE ]

That's why you need to measure circumference. The loaded radius of the tire can vary, but the distance travelled per revolution will not vary.

Actually yes, with the perkins and the cummins, there is an optimum speed where you get the best mileage, go faster and mileage drops.
That is why when I go 45 50 mph I get 30 mpg, when I push it to 65-70mph I drop down to 22mpg.
I don;t know if it's the inline engines or just those particular engines.
