Cummins/Allison/Rockwell/Planetaries/Peterbilt.....paint job completed

I haven't done a whole lot to it in the last week or so, I did change the steering, and removed the single 4x8 cylinder and replaced it with (2) 3x8 cylinders, one on each side of the frame so that I don't get anymore twisting from that 2" cross over shaft.

I am having issues with the back axle wanting to shift and move under the springs while under hard throttle during a turn. It is geared so low that there is just so much torque being put on the suspension. I am going to try tightening the living daylights out of the U bolts and might have to build a set of traction bars for the back axle to help it be more stable. Shouldn't be a problem getting the issue resolved, one way or another.

At this point, there won't be much more for updates on this project until late this coming summer. While it's nearly completed (90% done), I am going to have to hang it up and get busy working on tractors, discs, etc because it is almost time to start planting.

I will resurrect this thread in July/August when I go to finish the ladder platform for driver entry, A/C, stacks for the exhaust, and a complete paint job.:thumb:

If this is a working rig with product in the back, I definitely would make a track bar.

Couple more pictures. Replaced the 4x8 single steering cylinder with dual 3x8 cylinders to take the twist out of that 2" crossover shaft, worked like a charm.

I had to re-flight all the augers because the Allison and Chelsea PTO spin in the opposite direction as the old tractor transmission PTO. Below is a picture after I put the augers back in. I noticed I never did post a picture of the hydraulic tank, pictured also.

More pictures......

Tapered tail auger that sits in the bin floor, 12" at one end, 6" at the other.

New Ubolts for the rear axle, I had originally ordered 7/8" ubolts, which fit the original axles since I never planned to stumble across the 115 axles. They can accept 1" U bolts and I went ahead and changed them out. They should hold that rear axle in place just fine, tightened them up with the 1" impact gun too.

Last picture is of a brand new bankout those guys just finished, can't wait to get a paint job on mine.

Okay I'm ready for an update

Fall is almost here - any chance you've had time to work on this beast anymore?

Thanks,

Well, got started again on this project about a month ago, and am basically done at this point. It's pretty much field ready for it's first harvest that starts in 3 weeks from now.

The big thing to get done was the entry platforms and ladders.

Next was the exhaust system, emergency and field lights, A/C system, 2wd/4wd engagement, more gauges up and working, and cleaning up all the wiring hydro/cooler/air lines so that nothing rubs through eventually on a sharp spot of the frame, cab, etc.

The exhaust is a mix of 3.5" and 4" pipe, Magnaflow diesel muffler, and 60" chrome turn out 4" stacks. It's got a nice rumble to it and is fairly quiet in the cab now, which is what a guy would want after 10 hr shifts. It sounds like a Pete with the stacks, not like a Dodge pickup. I'll try and get a video up soon of that.

The A/C system has a new parallel flow condenser, custom made lines, the original Sanden pump that came with the Cummins from the Dodge pickup, and everything worked perfect inside the Pete cab as far as it's A/C HVAC system. R134 of course. Seems to not be leaking and works really well. I fired it up on an afternoon of the rig sitting in 95* california heat and in a few minutes it got the cab cooled down and I was comfy.:D You know you've got good A/C when it can get everything cooled back down after the oven effect has completely taken over something sitting out in the sun. You guys in the Southwest/West know what I'm talking about.

Got the headlights all working, dual emergency strobe lights for when we are going down the road, or unloading into a truck along side a road. 4x6 Hobbs rear facing field lights to light up the bin and unloading system. Amber side markers on the ladder platforms and rear clearance and brake lights on the back.

A/C pic

The 4wd system, I'm pretty proud of.:D I used a small pneumatic cylinder to drive the linkage for the engagement of 4wd. To get it back out and into 2wd, I used a big heavy spring to pull in the linkage and collapse the air cylinder once the air PSI is released. I used an air valve already in the dash of the pete cab to control it along with a light the comes on when 4x4 is engaged.

Here are some shots of the way it sits right now, field ready. I REALLY wanted to get it painted this year, but I am running out of time and have a whole fleet of equipment to maintain and I've got to move on once again. Paint will come either this coming winter if weather permits, or next summer before 2013 harvest.
