Im helping my buddy swap a manual (NV4500) in his auto 1994 Dodge Cummins. Got the flywheel/clutch/bell housing in but cant get the trans to line up. Does any one have any tips? We are using a engine hoist and strap, just cant get the input shaft all the way in the clutch. We re leaving it in gear and spinning the shaft. Ive done my 465 a million times but never had this hard of a time. The nv4500 has to be like twice as heavy as my sm465. Tomorrow I think we re going to try and bolt the bell housing to the trans first and then try to put it in like that? I dont know we been at it for hours. The clutch is lined up, the alignment tool still goes in fine. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions?

pull the input shaft out of the tranny. loosen the clutch off..... use input shaft to align disk. bolt down. do it until it slides in and out easy. thats the key right there.

Oh edit on the re-read..... your'e probably hanging up on the through out bearing. someone will have to watch up in there and push it up when you get there. I've had that happen before too.

leaving the bellhousing on the engine is still the better way.

Im pretty sure its getting past the bearing, bc we can get it up to the clutch and when you turn the shaft you can hear/feel it right on the outside of the clutch splines. So maybe we dont have the clutch lined up perfect. I think Ill try pulling the shaft like you said and loosening the clutch up.

just got finished doing this with my nv5600 and ran into a similar problem. i got 4- 3/8"x5" bolts and threaded them through the bell housing on the tranny and the adapter plate to line everything up correctly, after making sure the splines and the pilot were lined up on the clutch and then it slid right on. that was a relief after two days of frustration.
