They had diesel el-camino's!!
I remember seeing a few el-camino's with factory diesels, the olds based 260 V8 and 350 cid diesels!--you could order them in monte carlo's too!.
I have seen one camino with a 6.2,but it was 4wd,a camino on a K10 chassis, but I dont see why a 6.2 would not fit in one, they put 454's in them and 500 caddy's,and I think the caddy motor is physically larger overall than the 6.2--and the motor mounts are the same as gas chevy motors, the exhaust manifolds hug the block,so probably no clearence issues---and they did come with 3 or 4 speed manual tranny's from 78-86 too,you just dont see that many of them--it would be easy to convert one with parts from a malibu or monte ss if you had all the pedals and linkage...
There are several sites on the web with diesel conversions, one site I saw had a guy in sweeden putting a 6.2 in his 59 chevy biscayne!--and there are other weird ones too, like the vette tRurty posted about, and a few other ones like a "bandit" Trans Am with one in it!(probably couldnt outrun Beauford T. Justice in that one!)--
I think the diesel is going to be much more popular for the average joes in the future--they get better mileage, are cheaper to run,and last longer than most gas motors, since they know how to make them run quiet and smoke less nowadays, more people are willing to get one than ever before--VW is making more diesels bugs and jettas than gas the past few years, but most of them sell overseas, they are catching on fast here in the U.S. too--I kinda wish I hadnt sold my 86 diesel jetta,43 mpg was nice, especially when youre out of work and have little cash...
