Im picking up a TBI 350 that has a Comp Cams Xtreme 4x4 cam in it
http://www.compcams.com/Cam_Specs/CamDetails.aspx?csid=96&sb=2

Guy said he had a chip burnt to get rid of the sensors he didnt use and also to use this cam. This TBI stuff is pretty new to me so I was wondering if I will need a chip or not? Cam seems pretty mild but still seems like it will idle a little high.

Anyone on here do chip burning?

All I am getting is the engine w/o the TBI stuff and then I am putting all of the TBI stuff I have on it. Thanks

I have burned chips, but I don't do it professionally. :)

Brian over at TBIchips.com is highly recommended.

I would ask the seller though why he doesn't give you or at least swap a stock chip for the one he had burned. Depending on who did the chip, and how (IE dyno time or at least datalogged to find optimum settings, as opposed to some generic piece of junk) there is likely no reason for him to keep the chip...it is utterly worthless unless he intends to reuse it on an identical motor, which is unlikely if he's selling you one that's fine itself.

Everything about an engines performance, especially modified, is very individualistic, and if you have a chip burned for a specific combination, the chip should stay with that combination.

I guess he is picking up a 70s 350 with different heads to use with a tbi setup and he is going to use a similar cam so he wants to keep that chip. I already have a comp with the stock chip in it anyway. He is also keeping his comp and all the tbi stuff off the motor.

He should still trade you. You can't change heads/cam and have the chip be right, thats why you change the chip in the first place! If it was just engine size, you'd have about 8 different chips total. :)

I know you can't force someone to do something, but it's just stupid for him to keep it. (assuming it's worth anything in the first place)

I agree I didnt quite understand any of it. He wants to charge me another $75 for the chip though, which I dont have. I am barely scraping enough together just for the engine. I am sure a chip will be more than $75 though.

Yea i know that it will be more than $75 but he doesnt want to pay more either so he is going to try and use the old one.

I just had a chip made from Brian at TBIchips.com and it was 200.00 shipped. If you have an aftermarket cam the chances are pretty good that you'll hurt the new engine if you try to use a stock chip. I don't think i'd chance buying the chip from the guy as there is no way to tell if it was the chip that was made for that engine. You need to save your coins and have Brian burn you a chip. The only downside is that you need to give Brian a bunch of engine specifics for him to work with. This means you'll either need to know exactly what's in the engine or take it apart to find out yourself.

Well it is going to be a long process to get this engine in because I am doing headers, mojave heater and a bunch of other stuff before I get it up and running.

If it's a long process, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

You've always got the option of burning your own chips. I know Southernspeed has been really happy with his "burning" setup, but IIRC all said and done it is around $400 if you have a laptop already. But if it will be a long time, it might be worth it, since you'll have time to save.

Thats what I was thinking as well. It would be cool to be able to burn my own because I wouldnt have to wait on shipping and I could always change stuff.

You will definatly need a new chip to run that cam. It is not a computer frendly cam. Better suted for a carbed engine.
Does the engine you are getting have the stock TBI heads? If So IMO that is too much cam for them. Unless ported, TBI heads quit breathing around 4800 RPM. That cam builds power far past their limitations.
You can get a chip to make that cam work. But if you are staying with the stock Heads/intake I think I would go with a milder computer grind cam.
A comp XE249H would be a better cam if the engine is mostly stock. It should run on the stock chip. But I do recomend getting a custom chip for it to get the most out of it.

I believe they are the stock TBI heads. I really would prefer an engine I can just throw in and run so maybe I will pass on this one. Another guy here in CO (firefighter184) told me he has a complete TBI engine(comp, harness, everything) with less than 4k on the rebuild he would sell for $400 but I just dont have all the cash for it right now. Hopefully we can work out a deal so I can get that one instead since I believe it is stock. I dont need a ton of power just the FI advantages.

IMO I would pass on that engine. It is not something you can "Throw in and run" On the stock chip. I would also suspect if the engine is in good shape. The person is selling it for some reason. It is severly miss matched. As i said. It has too much cam for the heads. Things i would wonder about. are.
Does it have the right springs?
does it have the right retainers?
Screw in rocker studs would be a good idea with a cam with that much lift on TBI heads.
It makes me wonder if the person who built that engine knew what they were doing.
To put a cam like that with stock TBI heads raises some ????
The 400 engine sounds like a good deal. Also check wrecking yards.
Is there anything wrong with the engine you have now? It can be adapted to TBI fairly cheaply if you already have the parts.

Well I did a compression test on the 350 I have and the compression #s for cylinders 2-90 4-35 6-95 8-90. It has also been smoking a lot and leaking from the rear main. I already picked up a whole TBI setup from Mr250TwoStroke so I am basically looking for a decent long block.

Went ahead and got the engine. Stopped by in Montrose on my way back to Durango from Denver and checked it out. He has it running in his Jeep still so I got to hear it run and look it all over. The heads on it are actually not stock, they have been rebuilt with all new components and bigger valves. It ran really good and the only reason he is pulling it is to put in something with more power that he already built. I just couldnt pass this deal up! So i will have to get a chip burned eventually, I am still going to try and talk him out of the chip he is using though.

Sounds good. With the better heads, that cam will work good. If you cant get the chip. You will need to find what kind of heads are on it, how big the valves are,
Compression ratio, and if they are ported or not. That info will be helpful in getting te correct chip burned. That cam is a common upgrade cam. Tbichips prolly has a chip program for it.

He told me they were heads off of a 305. I think he might have a build sheet for them too hopefully. Hopefully he remembers the valve size and all that good stuff. I am pretty sure he said they were ported. I am going to pick it up this week sometime so I will ask him all that. For a Jeep guy and pirate member he is a pretty chill guy ;)

Got the engine home today! I am stoked! This is my first engine swap. Gotta buy a hoist and stand and some other random stuff. Dont really want to start a new thread for this if I dont have to so got a question- he was running a th350, will the flexplate work with my 700r4?

Probably, you just need to make sure the convertor lugs will line up with the holes in the flexplate. You also need to make sure the diameter is the same or you'll have to change starters also.
