Hey, I am looking for custom, homemade dash ideas. The pad is off the one I just bought, and after closer inspection, it looks as if someone has made a few cuts and riveted some panels in place:( . I am seriously kicking the homeade dash idea around. I would like to see some pics for ideas. I would be installing a cage as well. Alternativly, does anyone know where I could get replacement metal for this if possible? I read on another post that it is welded in? I may have a 1983 Suburban that I could snag one from. Any Ideas?

go over to pirate and search for "project freak" in the chevy forum... there is a whole thread dedicated just to the dash. Coolest one I've ever seen.

Do you have any links? The search feature is disabled for guests. I only subscribe to this board....

Thx.

Here's a rough pic after my stereo got stolen but gives you an idea on what I did. Theres two more guage pods to the left of the tach. Its all fiberglass.

follow the link in my sig to my gallery;)

Pretty sure everyone here is familiar with mine.. I retained the dashpad, tho I do plan on a cage thru it down the road.. I opted for a dashpad, mainly cuz mines a DD and didn't want to have the truck down for a full dash replacement..

so I went for just a custom bezel...

yep, I did a search in the gallary for *dash*, and your's was close to the top. That is close to what I want to do. I was thinking of going with black treadplate. I don't think that I would like the glare off bright treadplate. How did you frame it together? I was going to put in a cage and tie into that. Or, use most of the existing factory mteal, and cut out the place I want and reshape like ryoken. But if I built my own, from scratch it would be mostly functional, and I would try to keep some of the ammenities like the factory temp controls.

Thats what I did, makes it so much simpler....

What are those two additional gauges on the upper right? Trans temp? Oil temp? Engine vacuum? Trans pressure? Fuel/air ratio? Something else?

all the temp controls were still in mine;) thas what the manual choke cables are. the frame is just 1"x1" square tubing. i ripped all stock metal out. also it wouldnt be hard to make the stock one work at all, just cut the appropriate size hole out. as for glare. it actually wasnt that badd. it would only catch your eyes every now and then. what i was gonna do was cut something the size of the dash and throw it on top while driving.

trans and oil temp on the right.. eventually I'll add a vacuum to the fuel pressure out on the hood.. which will eventually go under the lip of a cowl hood when I get it...

Did you have to make any supports for the steering shaft?

Nope.. retains the stock down support for the column, pedals, etc... just hacked out some of the sheetmetal strips that segments the cluster area..

here it is with the sheetmetal sections taken out, painted, ready for the dash..
