I am looking to start drawing up the designs for a custom front bumper to go on my '85 k-5. So if you have some pics of your custom jobs or have some ideas that have helped in the past or mistakes you have made, they are all welcome. Thanks.

The best advice is to have the bumper built on your truck, in otherwords, dont take a drawing or design, go to fab shop and have them build it, bring bumper home and hope it fits. Have it mocked up and built on your rig. Otherwise, not too much can go wrong, there is plenty of space for bumpers.

If you are going to do a REAR bumper, some ppl have had to trim the back of the frame for bumpers to fit right.

How much do you usually take off the frame? and do you need to do the same to the front?

Wont need to do it on the front and may not have to do it on the rear. I did cuz I bought an "off the shelf" custom bumper that was suppose to be bolt on. it was not the rear frame as a sharp angle to it, this had to be cut to be flat so the bumper can fit. Hindsite being what it is, I wish I had a local 4x4 fab shop do it.

Im gonna be keepin up with my buddies jeeps and yotas, so im gonna be pushin some trees over i have a feeling. i want somethin stout enough to hit crap but not super heavy. i think im gonna do a little mini stinger too to help with the lessening of approach angle this thing is gonna take up. and i want to be able to stand on it so when i do get stuck i can crawl across the hood and be able to pull out some winch line lol.

this is one from blazenoffroad...

I'm more for the boxed style ones you posted in the end of the last thread. I vote that with a nice boner bar.

The all tube bumpers just arent my style, too many gaps. Probably nice for a step when hooking up straps / wrenching though.

This is mine that I built. It has hit several trees and rocks too. The front has a little dent in one of the tubes from hitting a rock after a full throttle assult climbing a rock ledge. Stopped the truck pretty quick. The rear has a little bow to the bottom tube from being wedged in and pivioting the truck in reverse on that tube. Also if you look at the pics you will see how far back my winch is mounted. I cut the grill around it and tucked it as far back as I could to keep the overhang as little as possible.

You could always pay this guy to buy a Road Armor ( http://www.roadarmor.com) or Buckstop bumper (http://www.buckstop.biz/) and then weld some tubes on it and call it his own: http://beastbumpers.com/contact.html. Or you could go with Blazen Offroad http://www.blazenoffroad.com/store/home.php) and get a good bumper. He has a lot of good pics of his bumpers (along with a plagiarized pic on the beastbumpers site, but I digress). All those sites can give you ideas, or you can pony up the bucks and just buy one.

The truck frames are different than a blazer frame on the rear because of the tailgate torsion springs. Whoever built this "custom" bumper must have used a truck for mock up without realizing there is a difference between truck and blazer.

Saw a pic of my bumper somewhere in here. I kind of liked it it squared off on the ends, like it was in the pic partially finished...
Anyways, it is plenty wide to stand on between the shackle mounts (wider than the stock bumper), but then tapers off towards the ends...
I just swapped intakes, and it was Much more comfortable to stand on than the stock one!

this should go to the right place:
