Hi,
Im thinking about a brush guard to mount a winch and some lights, tow points, but want to keep the stock front bumper on my 87 GMC. Found someone who will build me whatever I want if I have pictures for cheap. I sort of like the old school Fall Guy Warn Brushguard, but I know those were pretty flimsy (I had a similar one on a 92 Z71 from Warn). I want something stout in case I do hit something, strong for tow points, and solid winch mount. If you have photos of your set up that is pretty cool please post so I can get ideas and send to the fab guy. Also, any ideas on mounting a winch and lights so they are a little more thief proof? Tips on wiring and dual batteries if needed for adding a winch and extra lights?

Id like to get something mounted into the frame, which is stout as heck, comes up in a similar manner to the Trans4er or the other brush guards of the era. I dont know how difficult this might be to mount to frame while keeping the stock bumper on there?

Any ideas, photos, drawings, etc? I have been browsing the forums and done plenty of searches for winch bumpers. I love many of the winch bumpers, but am looking to just do a brush guard version, not an entire bumper (for both personal preference, and saving cash).

(maybe something like this just the center section, mounted to frame, but going over original stock bumper?)

(looks nice, would be cooler with the center section from above bumper instead of the winch sitting in the open on top)

(how many sweet trucks did the break a day??? hahah)

Thanks!!
Matt

PS-as a sidenote, still looking for a 6 lug SF 14 Bolt in SoCal! Someday will have better gearing, locker/posi, and crossover steering! Toolbox in bed wouldnt hurt either! :-)

No Ideas?

Any ideas on how I can keep the stock bumper, and get something built thats a cross between the old Warn brushguard (but made more solid), and the newer Twisted design?

kert at diy4x.com can probably rig up something sweet. im not one to volunteer anyone but kert can point you in the right direction. hes badass with these things.

Yeah, I would bet one of Kert Bumper centers would work, you probably might have to graft/cut your stock bumper to fit over it somehow but ANYTHING is possible. Since you dig the stock bumper look, what about building a stout bumper, tube or plate type bumper but use your stock bumper as a "cap" to cover the heavy duty one. Then you get the best of both worlds. You know stock bumpers are weak as hell and don't hold up in anything but a small tap to them.

Next time I come over Rob and brainstorm the rock sliders, maybe we can brainstorm the bumper idea a little and then Ill shoot a message to Kerk. He PM'ed me something about using a bumper center section with the stock bumper ends, so it sounds like you guys are tracking on the same page as far as a direction to move.

yeh i love dealing with kert....his bumper center or one like a twisted center would likely fit behind a stock pumper with some thinking....a cool sleeper look

Yea, and funny thing is guys I dont want to come off as some pretty boy pampering the truck type never use the transfer case. I actually moved here, and with my budget thought I would be getting an older truck that was pretty beat up to begin with, so beating on it wouldnt be a problem, hacking the sheetmetal, or doing body damage....then to my surprise I got a killer deal (I think) on a very clean shortbed which I am falling in love with as a DD. I want to wheel it, but dont want to totally beat the snot out of it and kill its mint condition for its age. So if I could find a way to work a prototype Twister/Kert type center section that is stout as hell, kinda gives the old Fall Guy look in the middle, with stock bumper sides covering something that has more meat to it for protection, would be sweet. Also some protection for those low hanging gas tanks, and maybe even something in the rear thats behind or underneath the stock bumper low profile to protect the rear end with keeping the stock look. I do have a class III hitch setup, was thinking maybe even a short extension of some sort of Rhinoisk step that goes in the hitch to take the beating if the rear is dragging on rocks.

The top pic is my rig and that Warn winch/brush guard is strong as hell. I rear ended a guy 3 years ago (Toyota Scion sedan) and i only put a very small scratch on the paint of that thing but i completely wasted his whole car (brand new still had dealer plates) i put his rea bumper and wheels in the back seat and spewed his back window and tail lights over my hood and roof.

I recently removed this mount since i built a new front bumper and i sold this one to a local CK5 guy here BUT if for some reason he doesn't come through it will be available. He's supposed to come pick it up this week sometime.

Anyone good at photo shop? Or computer drawing? Id like to try to make something that combines the Warn brush guard setup with a similar to Twisted lower frame mount, but not as hidden/pushed back. A few tow points, and on the light mounts Im thinking of trying to put two on the outside of the brush guard to the sides of the winch. Have the top bar of the brushguard a little lower, like mid-grill level, but beefy as hell, with light tabs if later on wanted to mount smaller lights above the winch, or a flag if I ever see the dunes. I dont think I can afford the LED lighting, but it sure would be cool to have an amber LED strip above or below the winch fairlead opening from something like www.rigidindustries.com.

And Rob's idea, how to maybe hide a rod or bar behind the stock bumper endcaps to beef them up a little.

I had one of hose warns too. I imagine they would do ok in an accident like scott had, but they tweak pretty easily when running the winch. unless its a straight pull, you'll end up with it tweaked to one side. Also, the headlight hoops arent intended for any kind of impact. They would do alot better if they were welded on rather than bolted-but even then...

Yea I dont want the headlight hoops, I just want a center section brush guard.

Something more slanted and sleek like Twisted, heavy duty front and lower brush guard like the Armor Winch Bumper, and the side profile similar to Warn.

There is another picture Im looking for that had a red K5 with a pretty sweet front bumper. I gotta run but will look for it later today...so anyone artistic on a computer can wave a wand and blend these 3 together? ha
