Yes, there was certainly nothing in the service or parts manual about a "flame arrestor". It does seem odd that they'd use metal there, since the stock paper element air filters were used before (and apparently after) that screen assembly was used.
My parts manual lists all the components (temp switches, vacuum motors, etc) that are parts to the air cleaner assembly, with no pictures, but the ONLY piece that I wasn't 100% certain they were talking about was the "deflector". But since I know they have a metal piece welded in, I figure that's what they were talking about.
I'm a little unclear why you'd need a flame arrestor with the stock air intake that was something like 3 feet long though?
