Cut the frame?

in the pic there seems to be plenty of room to move the spring hangers forward with little to no issues.

Moving the spring hanger forward would be awesome, but the furthest hanger back would be up in the arch section of the frame... remember, I already moved the rear spring forward b/c I'm using springs for a 3/4 ton not 1 ton.

3/4 ton and 1 - ton springs are the same length. it's only 4" move it and quit worrying about it.

then I have a different set of springs for a 3/4 ton chevy... because I've already moved the rear spring perch forward just to get the springs to mount to the front (rear) hangers. In fact it was pretty easy, all I had to do was pop the rivets, use the two existing rivet holes closer to the front and drill two more for the hanger. Maybe I've already moved it forward and don't realize it?

The stock 1 ton leaf springs were ~4-6" longer than my lift springs so I moved the furthest back hangers forward to get the springs to mount

That sounds right, my 3/4 ton came stock with the shorter springs though...

So if I moved the rear hanger forward to accomodate the 4" difference, does that mean I've already moved the wheelbase forward the 4" I need?

56" have a long side and short side. you need to get out a tape measure and measure your wheel base, as it sits.

yes, not all, most 3/4 tons came with 56" long springs.

Don't a lot of folks use a "Z" cut when cutting the frame instead of just a straight cut? I wouldn't cut the frame anyway. Too much hassle. Just rock the gap.

So after reviewing further with SweetK30 and the rest of you it appears that cutting the frame doesn't make much sense. I'm going to place the bed on where I think it looks decent, check to see how bad the wheel is out of alignment with the wheel well, and either get a zero rate and move the axle forward 1.5" or deal with the gap.

well its time for update. he is chicken to or somthing so i will.

6" lift all spring and rear's are 52" with hangers moved up 4" to fit. its what he had.

then zero rate in rear to move axle up 1" to make closer to the 131.5" so the box would line up better.

well its got 38x12.50x16.5 tsl sx on 16.5x9.75 wide rims now.

poser pic fresh out of the garage with box set on it to test fit. :wink1:

definitely a poser shot! beds not bolted down, front driveshaft is missing, big wire hanging from the front, no doors, some sort of TV antennae on the roof... but hey it finally runs and moves under its own power!

Can't wait to get dirty!!!

Get hammer, some filler, and some 16 gauge sheet, and extend the front of the bed three inches.

Not worth it... you probably wouldn't even have noticed it if we wouldn't have said anything. I'm just glad I didn't cut the frame now that I've seen the results! Ultimately, I want to cut it WAY down and lose the bed, but until then I'll just run it as is.

Looks fine to me, that gap will keep the bed from contacting the cab in a twist. Every GM truck of the '73-'87 body style that I've owned ended up with dimples in the back of the cab from twisting the bed into the cab.
