I have seen a few posts and read some articles that mention a cutting break but can somone explain this to me? Or maybe a few possible links where I can do some research on the subject.

Cutting brakes are used for sharp turns. Let say if you engage(lock) left rear brake & drive thru(apply power) the turn on your right rear. It will pivot on the left rear tire. This will only work if you have a Detriot or simuliar locker that will unlock or open diff. NO SPOOLs or WELDED. This also helps an open diff if you have 1 wheel spinning, apply brake to that wheel, it transfer some bias to the non spinning wheel. In essense a poor man's locker. Hope this helps you understand it alittle better. /forums/images/graemlins/usaflag.gif

Atlas is a good case for cutting brakes cause you can disengage the rear drive and just have front. an ARB is another good option for cutting brakes.

All right I get the concept but how does one go about making one side of the axle brake and the other freely rotate?

you have to run a seperate brake line for each side, then have it operated by a lever of some type, when you want to lock one wheel you pull that lever and the brake is applyed to only one tire and the other three can drive

I have them on my Blazer. You can see the pics in my webshots. http://community.webshots.com/user/rjdinkins
I do not use them real often, but they definitely come in handy when you want to make a tight turn. I dis-engage the rear axle, lock one side and drive around on the front axle only. I also have detroits in both ends and the cutting brakes still work fine.
