A buddy of mine took the CV shafts out of his 96 Z71. He wants me to fix them, other then normal handtools what special tools do I need? Will I need to do anything with the torsion bars?

Do they just slide out of the diff slipjoke style?

I replaced them on an 86 Buick Le Sabre a few years back, and managed ok.

Any thoughts guys?

The shafts bolt to the stub on the diff. You'll likely have to remove the steering knuckle to get the shaft out. That will require a 3/8" allen socket, 36 mm deep socket, 1"-1 5/16" sockets depending on what size the nuts are on the ball joints. A big hammer and the usual jack and wrenches. Don't use a pickle fork on the ball joints unless you intend to replace them!! hit the knuckle around the taper with a big hammer with the nut loosely installed to pop the taper.

You might get lucky and be able to pull the shafts out through the inside between the flange and lower control arm and not have to pull the knuckle so try that first.

Reman shafts are cheap so don't waste your time replacing boots.

OK thanks sounds like I should be able to get the job done fairly easily.

How does the CV shaft bolt up to the stud on the diff?

Ya I hadnt planned on messing with the Boots at all.
