I've always understood that front axles were considered full floating axles.

I recently read an article that claimed D44's to be "full/semi float" and D60's to be full floating. No further explanation was included.

What's the deal?

When talking about a semi floater or a full floater axle it's a rear axle that's being talked about. I don't know of any full floater D44 rear axle but the D60 comes in both versions as well as the 14 bolt axle.

There are conversion kits for the rear D44 I think to make it full float.

That would entail alot of work since the housing end would need to be cut off and a new one welded back in place and a custom set of axles made.

Good point. I've never paid it any mind as it's a Jeeper thing. I've already got a 14bff. I got the impression it was a purchased bolt and go thing.

jekbrown had it on his 1/2 tons that another member is now running(JIMM88K5??), 4 locking hubs

Warn used to make kits for Jeep axles and D44. I thought there was a kit for the rear 10-bolt as well. I don't know what is available anymore. Cheaper to get a bigger rear end, but I guess if you really wanted to keep it light and have more ground clearance it could be good.

Solid front axles are full floaters. The wheel bearing does not work as a retainer for the axle. Nor does the axle carry the vehicle weight load. Hope that helps

That's the thought process I always understood. Are all D60 rears full float? That might explain the reference.

Doesn't really matter I was just curious whether there was some hidden meaning behind it all.
