The pinon on a d44 came lose, I can move it around about 1/4 of a inch. Thinking its just a bad pinon bearing or crush sleeve?? Never seen this before. And the gears and detriot was just put in like 6months ago by a shop. I pulled the cover and the gears look fine. My question is, can i pull the carrier and remove the pinon, put a new bearing or crush sleeve on and install in all back it the same way it came out without messing with the backlash? Thanks

Hell I'd take it back to the shop that did the work. Sounds like a pinion bearing to me.

Yeah with proper inspection, did the pinion nut come loose or did they not crush the sleeve all the way.......Anyway, I would definitely take it back to the shop that did it. Only 6 months they shoud honor their work.

Dana 44s use shims for pinion bearing preload. Did they use a new nut on the pinion yoke? These are a steel locknut, and they should not really be re-used as they can come loose. Also, the pinion bearings could have failed if they were preloaded too much or not enough.
