d44 spindle bearing question

When installing a spindle bearing on my d44, should I tap it all the way to the seat or just enough so the little seal that goes at the end of the bearing is flush with the outer edge of the spindle? I currently have it tapped it all the way to the seat, but it looks a little too far, and I don't know if that is good to let the seal have an 1/8 inch or so of potential floating room.

The seal doesn't float it should be tight fit and there is no reason why the bearing should ride right against the seal.
I always put the bearing all the way to the stop.
Are you talking about the inner bearing on the spindle or the outer one?
 
The bearing should only be installed deep enough for the seal to fit. If you install the bearing any deeper then the seal can move further in and can't do it's job any longer.
 
I have got to start reading these things slower.
When I first read it, I thought he was talking about wheel bearings, and neither the question nor your answer made any sense whatsoever.

Went back and reread it and realized he was asking about the spindle bearings on the axle and it made a lot more sense.........

How does the seal move?
It should be hammered in and I never had a seal move in any direction unless something heavy was hammering on it? :dunno:
 
I am talking about the inner spindle bearing. The small seal just kinda sets in there, it is all rubber, you just set it in there. There is also a plastic thrush washer that goes on outside of that

Just like nutt7 said, it is an all rubber seal and will move freely if there is extra room.

Gotcha, it's been a while since I messed with one and thought it was with a steel sleeve.
