Have a 78 K5. Would like to go with D60 and 14FF.

from a used rig what should i look for? what can go wrong with these? After getting them what should i replace/ rebuild in them? kinda general i know but i'm not sure where to start. would axles from a military truck work and be bolt in? also the other option is the trailer special 4x4 version for the 70's right?

Before you look into D60's, ask yourself and tell us what your plans are for the rig.

You don't need a D60 unless you're getting into bigger tires and harder off roading.

If you're gonna use tires 35" or under, you will be just fine with a D44 or 10 bolt front.

If you're gonna just drive it on the street with an occasional off road venture in mud, hills, etc., you'll be just fine with the 3/4 ton axles.

Don't start thinking you need a D60 when you don't.

A little more in specifics of "off road".

Rocks? Mud? Hills? Water? Sand? What? Is the terrain you're looking at a D60 requirement?

38" or larger. Its been a general rule of thumb that anything 38" or bigger should see the use of a D60 front especially with harder and heavier use off road.

I would also include 37" tires. Depending on the motor, weight of the vehicle and driving style, some people need 1 tons for 33-35" tires too.

well, to answer a question I really have no business answering hahahah

3/4ton 14 bolt axles fit right under the k5, 14bsf and 14bff.
1ton 14bff needs the perches moved.
D60 I believe fits right under as well. If you get a srw, it will go in bitchin. The drw will have the dually hubs, and aside from running different rims, you will need some different hubs to run your regular rims.
All these axles normally give you 8 lugs, so you need rims to go with them.
A 14b wont kill you to rebuild, most just throw it under and forget about it.
A D60 will cost you, this is your steering axle and has all those wonderful wear parts that (unless you find something done or fresh off a good running truck) will need replacing. Those part and their prices can be found on rockauto.com or some place like that. I think

hehehe

You forgot another tip:

1 ton 14FF needs the shock mounts relocated, too.

you should always start with what size tire you want to run, and then go from there as far as everything else is concerned, and i mean everything:waytogo:

can't pick a stereo amp when ya don't know whether your gonna run Boggers or not... :wink1:
