put a d60 in my k5 and at around 40 mph it starts to shake and wobble like crazy. the 1 ton i took it out of i got a really good deal on because of this fact but before i installed it in my k5 i rebuilt it new kingpins, bushings, bearings. is there something i missed? any advice on what i should check out. other info has 8" lift, no swaybar and an ord crossover steering kit any advice would be great thanx guys

alot of things can cause it, i had to deal with getting a perfect alignment till i could run it without a steering stabilizer without death wobble, you can put a couple fender washers under your kingpin top caps or try a new steering stabilizer, are your tires out of balance pretty bad?

i had thought about trying a new steering stabilizer do you thing a dual stablizer is a good idea? also i imagine my tires are'nt balanced very well i run 40" groung hogs and the shop that mounted them said there is'nt a balancer that will balance tires that big.

Go hydro assist and forget about what death wobble feels like. :deal:

What about when you hit the brakes, does it get worse or go away after you slow down? How long had it been doing that on the other truck?

I ask this because my cc has a nice vibration to it around 45 mph. When I get above that and try to slow down the shaking really starts. Very irritating but I am trying to figure out if it's the driveshaft or not.

You need to shim your king pins with 2 fender washers per side.;)

Chaddy,

What size washers and do they need to be coated or anything. I am also trying to do a search for this but never had to deal with it before.

If you go to home depot or lowes, they will have fender washers that are 1/16 thick so you will need 2 per side. They are not coated and they dont need to be.

Take the king pin caps off

put the washers in the cap

put the cap back on

your tire shop is either not equipped to do it or they are dumb, or lied. I worked at a commercial tire shop that had the capability to spin balance any DOT tire. I spun balanced tractor trailer tires on a daily basis. I spun my 44's on the machine to see how far they were out so I know someone can spin your 40's.

get some equal tire balance or run air soft pellets.

if you have all new components you shouldn't need the washers. its possible that your castor is off, or even your camber. do you have a small set of wheels and tires you can put on it. if so, go get it aligned.

did you shim the front axle after the lift? that might be part of your problem.

if you have a small set of tires and it wobbles on the way to the alignment shop you will know its not the tires, or not just the tires.

It doesnt matter if the whole axle is brand new......If you put anything bigger than a 35 inch tire, the spring will compress faster and not have enough preload to keep the cone on the king pin so it moves around causing death wobble.

The washers will keep the cones where they need to be by adding the extra tension on the spring.

Not true!!!

My DW came back on my d60, so bad that I could not drive it on the road faster than 25mph

Two reasons:
1) Badly worn bis 40" TSL -- Fix new set of Iroks
2) Kingpins needed to be re-shimmed
The shims I used were poly and were crushed out of shape. This time I used a thick washer and HD fender washer which was much thicker.

I would not recommend just using fender washers, I have replaced mine twice already. Both times the washers were destroyed.

I have a completely rebuilt D60 and after about 1.5 years i developed DW. I tried to figure out what was causing it by replacing EVERYTHING on the front axle and still not fixed. I even tried the fender washer trick and it still wobbled. I finally said screw it and installed hydro assist and have not had a problem again and that was a year ago.

I rebuilt my front - and still had dw. I put in the shims/washers from Home Depot and all is good now. The tire shop said they couldn't balance my 39.5" TSL's. No balance weights on them, and dw is gone with just the shims. I'm going to put some of those air soft bb's in also. I'll get the denser one bb's .20g vs the normal .12g bb's.

So, basically, yes the the shims do work. I was skeptical at such an easy fix and put it off for a long time - I wish I would have done it sooner.

For the tire balancing I recommend:

They really do work great and won't break down, be too large to distribute evenly, or cause damage to the wheel or tire.

Thanks for that link :waytogo::waytogo:

Great info and weight charts there. I'll be using the info but I'm gonna try Air Soft pellets first:D

The washer solution for D60s. Finding a replacement (stiffer) spring would be a better idea. Certainly are enough people here to get the specs on, or test, a stock spring, and find a supplier for replacements. Might even be enough to interest a vendor into carrying them;)
