so im about to install my D60 gears, i have no original carrier or shims, only the original pinion shims, but my question is about the carrier shims, i no u have to move it left to right, but is there a certain width it should be? im concerned ill get good backlash and mesh but have too many shims? and have too much bearing preload once i torque the carrier caps down.is it possible? or have too few shims and the bearings r too close to sit in the races properly. is this an issue or are the shims too thin to matter much?

The carrier shims set the backlash and bearing preload. Make the bearing preload tight or the bearings will spin on the carrier and it will be junk.

ok,that makes sense. so i think ill try and get my backlash set. and then add an equal amount of shims to each side to get the correct bearing preload.

You got the right idea, you should still be fairly tight when getting your backlash so you know it is right.
