ROLL TIDE
hello friends, im doing an LS swap in my K5. im looking for a 60 up front. im not completely decided on whether to stick w a 400 and stay w pass drop or go newer trans w a driver drop. i know if a go w the latter i need a high pinion driver and if older just a plain ole pass drop will do. im really leaning toward going new school all the way but it could determined by what axle i can find at the right price. if anyone (near Alabama) has a 60, preferably ready to go (or atleast not needing alot to be trail ready) let me know. im looking to get something in the next week or so. ROLL TIDE !!

Sorry to get off track but what part of the state are you in? I’m almost at the bottom.

The driver's side t-cases from the "LS" series engines (assuming you're talking about a truck Gen III/IV 4.8/5.3/6.0, the actual LS engines are from cars), are generally really undesirable. Slip yokes front/back, no SYE on the back available for any of them and many (the NV24X) don't have an SYE available for the front which is unusable on a solid axle.

You could use an NP241 from an earlier '88-98 truck, those are good/common and can have fixed yokes front/back, but still require the driver's drop Ford front axle. It depends on what you're doing for suspension, but if you're planning on leaves you'd need the rarest and most sought after '77-79 Ford D60. Those are getting really hard to find.

Or you can run a passenger drop transfer case with either the older or newer trans, there are adapters now for most older t-cases to most newer transmissions. We do a lot of that.

Damn, just when i think ive got a handle on what i need to know to make some smart decisions and jump on this front end swap, somebody has to go and throw down some useful knowledge that gets me scratchin my head again. Thanks alot Chris,, haha. seriously though, for now, i have no plans on link suspension, just getting some height with springs and shackles. my main reason for lookin at driver drop was because ive read and been told that a high pinion (reverse rotation) is stronger. so, with that info, i figured, just go with what will last and work well for me for a long time. obviously now would need a driver drop tcase, so i immediately start thinkin late model tcase and trans. i wasnt aware of tcase adapter to run older trans. i think i would rather run an older trans, mainly for simplified electronics. guess i need to think a little more on this. thank you for the info Chris

Right on. I was hoping you might be a little further south, not many of us down here. Watch the regional forum, we usually get together to eat or ride a couple of times a year.
