So I picked up a military cucv in may. I fixed a couple of things so it would be drivable, including new tires. I started noticing they showed lots of wear considering I only put about 3k miles on them. I also noticed the tires were tilted in at the top of the tire, and I could feel quite a bit of clunking on hard turns. This truck had less than 20k miles since new (1985), so I figured I take it apart and have a look- holy moly! king pin bushing cracked in half, but the king pin itself was barely screwed into the axle c. I literally turned it like two turns with my fingers, and out it came. What's weird is, there was no death wobble, vibrations and only a little pulling to one side. The threads were all good, and everything bolted back together with new parts. These things are supposed to be torqued to 5-600 ftlbs, so how in the world did they get so loose? Bad assembly line install?

Either its been beaten or someone has had it apart. A CUCV 60 I had was the same.

Got a Kingpin kit from ORD, fixed all the BS up there.

Heck I just wish I had a D60 for my rig.

I know the struggle lol. It took me 6 months to find the right one.

The only time ive seen a bushing crack was from hitting a curb at a decent speed. Its likely something of that nature happened but a spring and bushing kit would take care of that. Theres also a good chance that a big hit could loosen up that king pin and further usage would loosen it up more or it was rebuilt wrong. You wont have any problems after you replace that stuff.

That was probably more like 120k miles. Also parts were mixed and matched to keep them running. Could have been a different gauge cluster swapped in, axle robbed and replaced, whole body transplanted to a different frame, etc. They did all kinds of stuff with those CUCV's, so most people just assume the miles on the odometer are not correct.
Some were well maintained and treated well, while others lacked good care and were abused.
Mine came with 10k on the odometer, but the body says at least 110k, with the engine and front axle obviously replaced at some time.
