Hey Guys,

icon_sign_help.gif
I have to fix this problem:

DSC00186.jpg

My D60 Mud Slingers are shot! They need to be replaced. I have some choices to make.

Choice #1: Stay Stock

Replace existing MUD SLINGERS and seals
Replace u-joints with my Spicer SPL55-3X
Replace OEM Hubs with Warn Premium 30 Spline Hubs

Choice #2: Upgrade

Replace Outer Shafts with 35 Spline Chromolies
Replace u-joints with Spicer SPL55-4X
Replace OEM Hubs with Warn Premium 35 Spline Hubs

Do they make MUD SLINGER's and seals for the 35 spline shafts?
Do Y'all even run the MUD SLINGERS or do you remove them and go?
Who'se shaft do you go with: Yukon? Alloy's? Spicers? Superiors?

I found an article that talks about upgrading with Spicers. All the parts are available through ORD. I have to do something, and I want to do it right the first time. I have the money to do this job, but not Chromolies all the way through, i.e., inners and outers.

Please help direct me. What is your take?

Happy New Year!

i would replace the slinger & seals for sure. the same part does either 30 or 35 spline shafts, so that is no biggee. as far as shafts & upgrading to 35 outers i would do as much as i could afford. that is if u think u will break it. i bought new dana inners & 35 spline dana outers when i rebuilt mine. i could not afford to go aftermarket on the shafts. don't forget if u go 35 on the outers u will have to buy new hubs or drive flanges. warn lockouts are about $200 iirc.

Yeah replace the seals and the spindle bearing for sure. The part number is SBK3 or BK3.
As for the 35 Spl upgrade?? No idea, never done it

Question? From pics I've seen, the 35 spline is thicker than the 30
35vs30-2.jpg

so how can the same parts fit both shafts?

I can afford the 35's so I believe it's the way I will go. The slinger has been the hold up. I can't find it anywhere. As far as the hubs go, I will be getting Warn Premium hubs, 30 or 35's depending, so that won't be an issue.

Thanks!

Manny

the 35 splines are 1.5" the 30's are 1.31"

u are not looking at the right end of the shaft the 30's are 1.5" were the seals go & the slinger is on a shoulder that is bigger than that.

i got a part number for the slinger & most other d60 parts. gimmee a minute & i'll post it.

dana calls it a stone gaurd. part # 37308 hope that helps. surely ORD or Randy's R&P carrys it

Yeah boz,

It does help. Actually I have a full schematic and parts list for every part of that D60. All the Dana part numbers. Problem is cross-referencing. This seems to be an art lost by our new counter guys who only build whoop-ties! I need to find an old fart who has 25+ years of experience under his belt and builds muscle cars. That kinda parts jockey is worth his weight in gold!

I'm leaning towards ORD for everything. I found an awesome write-up. Here's the link:

Thanks for helpin' out. Y'all are

Everything on a 35spline shaft is the same diminsions except the end where the locking hub engages. That is where the size is increased to 1.5" and 35 spline.

Replace everything. Slinger, seals, spindle bearing and u joint. I would upgrade to the 35 spline stuff if I were you. You have a good motor with a full bodied truck going on large tires. You will need the 35 spline stuff in the long run.

Try it with out the Chromo stuff and then see if you really need to upgrade to high $$ parts.

ORD normally has all of the stuff you are looking for but with the recent snow storms in Denver the shipping might be a bit slow for a few days yet. We don't have produce on the shelves in the Grocery stores as of tonight. So I know UPS is behind.

I went with 30 spline 4130 so I could run my locking hubs and not have to do to slugs...no prblems, plus I have a backup set of outer in the form of the sotckers...

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all the posts. It looks like I'm going to go Spicer 35 spline outers, Warn Premium Hubs, all new bearings, races and seals everywhere, and while I was searching, I found these:

MAD4WD Dana 60 Outer Axle Seal

Once I get my D60 tore down completely, I'm taking her over to the sand blasters. I'm gonna have her completely stripped. Then I'll prime her, rattlecan paint her and rebuild completely! All the other parts are going to Mr. Velesky to be acid bathed, so it should come out great!

Again, thanks for the help. You've really lifted my spirits!

Happy New Year!

. Haha... I hear ya on the Longfields, and yes, I want to do them, but I have to be realistic about the cash flow. The rebuild on this D60 was unexpected and frankly, I was unprepared for it. I need to compromise right now, and this seems to be the best alternative. $1,850.00 for Bobby's aren't out of the picture. They just have to wait. I've got more important things to get, like DRIVE SHAFTS.

You're rich! :haha:
