hey all,
so i started tearing into my 60 today to re-gear it to 5.13. i pulled all the bearings and shims and measured all the shims to start my shim calculations for the new gears and noticed that there was (is) NO oil slinger washer on the pinion. my question is if there was no slinger there before should i not install now? or should i install it and subtract the thickness of the slinger washer from the thickness of the inner pinion shims and put the slinger in??? it looks like the axle was rebuilt before i picked it up, the axle seals are mint as well as the bearings and races ( im replacing them anyway) just kind of adds to the mystery......

If the axle was running before without any issues i wouldn't worry about it. I'm pretty sure my D60 doesn't have a slinger either.

There should be a slinger between the inner pinion bearing and the pinion head. Also there should be one between the outer pinion bearing and pinion seal.

Just like you said install the inner slinger and subtract the thickness of the slinger from the pinion depth shims.

anyone have a pic? I'm trying to picture what your talking about...

The slinger is there to keep oil in the pinion bearings.

There is another slinger type deal between the upper pinion bearing and the seal (to keep oil away from the seal).

To the original poster, some have them and some don't. If you can put the slinger in there (i.e. its not too thick) then I would.

Here is an exploded view from pirate:

No. 3 is the inner pinion oil slinger and No. 8 is the oil slinger that goes between the outer pinion bearing and seal.

All I see is a red x but I understand what you're talking about now...
