I want to replace the cheesy snap rings that came with my superwinch locking hubs (for stock 30 spline outers). I don't have the stock ones, so I need to know what size snap ring to use. Also the super winch locking hubs came with a larger locking ring, but my Chevy hubs don't have a cut out for them to slide into, so I can't use them. Why would they include them in the kit if you can't use them? Do the non chevy and Dodge hubs use a second locking ring, like a D44?

Not sure about different brands on hubs but all that chevy axles i've seen use a large round wire ring that holds the inner part of the locking hub to the wheel hub and then a small external c-clip to hold tension on the stub shaft. If what you're describing isn't either of these clips then post a pic of what you have and someone will help you sort it out.

I have this. which is bent and won't stay on my stub shaft.

The D60 wheel hub I have does not have a groove for the large clip in the picture to fit in. The locking hub assemble is held in by a single cheap snap ring. On my old dana 44 I used both the large ring in the picture and also a snap ring. On my D60 I can only use the snap ring. I don't have the groove for the larger ring.

Just about any auto parts store should have the small c-clip. As far as your hub not having a groove for the large clip i don't knowwhat to tell you. I don't see how your locking hub could stay on without it as that's what the 6 small bolts on the locking hub pull against to tighten the locking hub against the wheel hub.

The cover for the locking hub bolts into the gear that being held by the small snap ring.

Did you use the larger locking ring on your D60? If so did, your hub have a groove machined for it?

I running a SRW hubs.

I know eactly how the locking hubs are held together. The small snap ring only keeps tension against the inner seal and the hub itself is retained by the large wire clip. Yes my D60 have the groove in the wheel hub just above the splined area and mine is a Chevy SRW as well. Maybe you aren't understanding where the large wire clip goes. If you only rely on that small clip to hold everything together i'm afraid you're probably going to end up with some ruined parts.

That answers my question. My hubs must be damaged since they don't have the groove for the large clip. The walls on the inside of the hubs look pretty tore up.

It's hard to tell from that pic but what about the other side? Does the other side have a groove for the clip?

I don't know what to tell you. Maybe you need to get Wes (thatk30guy) in here to check it out.

Here is the GM service kit:

It contains of 12 torx screws (only 6 in picture)
a pair of
- inner snap rings (see installation instruction for details)
- outer snap rings
- o-rings (square type)
- small installation sheet (Imho, the thin retaining ring belongs to newer vehicles and the thick one to older - just opposite of what the instructions mentiones. At least my 84 K30 CUCV needs the thin rings).

My warn premiums did contain a slightly different hardware (iirc):
- philip head screws (i like the torx a lot more, so i'm using them)
- other outer snapring. Not sure if the original ring would fit with the warn assembly (there's an old thread somewhere here about that).

Like in the GM instruction, also warn does not recommend to grease the locking hubs! Just slightly oiling will keep it functional.

Finally some photos of the grooving and the outer snapring installed (without locking assembly for a better sight) .
