OK after banging, swearing and other fruitless attempts to remove the spindle nut from my D60 it has become painfully obvious that in the early 90's the Incredible Hulk moonlighted as an axle assembler for GM. I even broke down and bought the freaking socket. The socket don't quite want to stay on so I can't really torque on it. anyone got any neat tricks? I don't have a torch to heat it up and catch all the grease on fire so that's out. The socket says not for impact but I think I may have to try that. Thought I'd ask first however.

Anyone?

Thanks

use a ratchet strap to hold contact onto the nut, the you are free to turn without worrying about the damn thing falling off.

I just looked at the D60 bible over on pirate for the 4th time and had an ah ha experience. I have the 4 slot style nut and it appears that there is a little pin that indexes into the lock washer. i wonder if i push that back with a screw driver if i can turn the nut...

surely someone has rebuilt a D60 with this style nut?

Are you having trouble with the outer nut or the inner. the outer should spin right off. then you have to remove the washer from between the nuts. the back off the inner nut. I have used an impact to take the nuts off, never on. the impact is nice because you can lean against the gun to keep pressure on the socket. short bursts with the trigger.

Or call Manny and have him do it.

you need to pull that metal key out with a magnet or magnetic screwdriver then remove the snap ring before using the socket to take the nut off. I learned this from taking the hubs off my 14FF.

14bolt is different than the 60 front.

It's the outer nut. I can't see anything holding it on. If i can't get it off with the impact tonight, I'll see if I can get some good hi res pictures for some guidance from the brotherhood. I also owe some pics of the brakes on it. They were a treat to behold.

That's one of the things that suck about FL. There's barely anyone local and no rocks to play on. Unless you count jeepers & piles of crushed limestone...

Sometimes you do have to wiggle the washer in between to get it to turn loose of the outer one.

Finally a bit of success! Impact made short work of it. Spindle actually looks good thank god. Now I just have to find my BFH to get the spindle off...

And I discovered reason #54 why running a DRW 60 with H1s rock... my rotors are bolted to the hub, not pressed. :D:D

Thanks for all recommendations!
