Isn't it true that with a detroit- or most any locker, if you break a shaft the sudden jarring will exploded the locker? I likely won't ever have $650 for a detroit so I'm considering welding it.

Yes, it can happen and I've seen it many times...but on the other hand I've seen broken shafts and the Detroit or other locker was fine. It probably happens more on Pirate because you have people breaking chromo shafts which puts a lot more force into the Detroit than a normal Spicer shaft.

I've broken 2 30-spline D60 stubs, and 1 necked-down inner and my Lock-right is fine. A buddy broke a 35-spline Spicer stub on his D60 and the Detroit is fine. On the other hand I've seen a guy break stock D30 shafts and aftermarket Toyota shafts and it destroyed the Detroit.
