Has anyone run a d70 with after market chromoly shafts in it? Will said set up hold up to 39.5s and a detroit? I did the search thing and found alot of info, but nobody mentioned the chromoly shafts. But the main down fall I seen was shafts breaking. I would think they would fix that problem.

I need some 4340 or 300M rear shafts but stock ones are cheap and dont break very often. If you switch to good custom rear shafts they will be double ended so you will need drive flanges too. 39.5s and a Detroit is no big deal for a Dana 70. How much horsepower do you have nd how heavy is your vehicle?

Uhh...I've never seen a broken stock shaft and I wheel with guys with big blocks and 45" v-treads...

I think there isn't much information because nobody breaks full float 1.5" shafts even if they're made of cheese.

I'd be a lot more worried about running 1410 ujoints than upgrading the shafts.

Everything can break. The shafts in my truck now are candycanes and need to be swapped out. These are all 35 spline Dana 70, I have twisted 14 bolts too. I mark them with lines and check them every couple runs.

Completely depends on how you use/treat it, but typically the stock 35 spline (assuming that's what you have) works well with that size tire.

no not the front ones. I actually didnt know there was fronts. I just bought an 88 1 ton crewcab dually that has a d70 rear. I will be shortening the frame tubeing the rear, exo cage , all that. I've seen them on here before. I'll be running the stock tbi454, th400, and an np205. I wheel mainly on forest type land www.thecliffsinsaneterrain.com
and I plan on taking it to Blazer bash, rubicon, and all the other good places I can find. total trailer pig
I found a site that sells chromoly shafts for the d70 $180 a piece. sounds like cheap insurance to me.

For all around general simplicity Dana70=14bff BUT no third pinion bearing. Thats really the only thing Im aware of that makes it inferior.

alright, thanks guys. I think I'm going to get the chromoly shafts anyway and build a pair of hold tubes on my rear cage for the stock ones as back up. sounds like if I break the chromoly ones it'll be time to go home for the day anyway, cause I'm doing somthing wrong:rolleyes:

Lol if you're breakin full float shafts, you might wanna carry an extra frame with you too :D

Oh so true but sometimes doing stuff wrong feels oh so right :haha::haha:

Stock 70 shafts will break, Ive seen broke 14 bolt shafts too.
$188 is faily cheap for shafts. I would find out the brand & check around on their reputation.

My rig is 6000 lbs with a 540 stroker, & 42" swampers. I am liberal with the skinny pedal. This is the last 70 shaft I broke. I was in a nasty "V" notch & had that side loaded very hard.

What companys shafts were you looking at? Some aftermarket shafts are no better then stock Dana-Spicers. I put a set in my truck and they twisted at the spines after a couple runs. Now I just stock up on OEM shafts.

I guess it was 170. I havent checked into their reputation yet. Its gonna be awhile before I'm ready to do anything with the 1 ton. I gotta get my kids 72 and the burnt burb running first. Right now I'm gathering all the info I can for this build. that way when I'm ready I can just go at it and not think about it.

Chromoly shafts for a rear D70 would be pretty low on my list of "needed" items, especially with only 39.5" tires. Anything can break but not too many people break 35 spline D70 rear shafts. 78Buford on here has been running a D70 in his Ford with a moderately built 460, 42" TSL's running single digit pressures, with a foot-to-the-floor driving style.
