You should take something like a piece of charcoal briquette and rub it into the digits. Then get a piece of sandpaper and rub the tubing until its shiny. Then you'll be able to decipher the digits a little better.

Soapstone rubbed over the stamping would probably work good too.

Charcoal rub. Peice of paper and some charcoal. After scrubbing with a red scotchbrite lubed with wd40

should have mentioned...the 76 housing I hit with a wire brush, then some brake cleaner with the wire brush, then some lumber crayon, wiped off the excess hoping it would stay in the numbers but it wasn't any clearer, tried some soapstone, rubbed it inot the numbers real good then gently wiped away the high points, still hard to read...the best result I had was with it completely clean and shining a flashlight at different angles.

so my reasoning behind this is to see if the Dodge D70U diff would plug into the D70HD housing.
after looking up the numbers I thought it to be (OK I do have an advantage of blowing the pics up more on my computer than these posted pics will allow) the Ring and Pinion kit have different part #'s from the Dana BOM listing...

the D70U from the Dodge....

The D70HD from the 76 CC (only goes back to a 79 model year, but I'm assuming they are the same)

GM Model 70/267 REAR 1979 - C-30 DUAL WHEEL - 70HD

I will give Randy's a call soon to see what the compatibility is.

I don't think there's anything compatible nor will interchange between the two. Both have different pinion offsets along with the different part numbers as you posted.

called Randys
They said the 3.54 r/p from the D70U would swap into the D70HD
