D70 fronts

Old ones ain't worth a ****. Get the parts and make one. Also what type of board are you? Oak, Cedar, Pine...?

I have yet to see a "factory" open knuckle king pin version of a Dana 70. I know where there are 2 fronts, one is complete still in the rotted out Dodge, and the other in a junkyard, but is missing the inner axles, carrier and bearing caps.

What I think is funny, one that is complete still in the truck, is a 3/4 ton, with, Dana 70 front and a Dana 60 rear. It's a early/mid 70s, leave it to Dodge to do something bass ackwards.

Quigley might still have some open knuckle 70s, there is one for sale on Pirate.

I found one of them for sale out west here. Supposedly out of a 77 F350 Quigly van. There is also one out here in the front of a 80's Dodge W400 4x4.

What about the ones in the 94-00 3500HD's? Are they balljoint or kingpin?

Edit: Lol! You're a smartass :haha:.

IF you can find one of the very rare open knuckle D70 fronts they aren't much of a strength upgrade over a D60.

The inner shafts are the same size (35 spline), the outer shafts will also be 35 spline (stock D60's are 30 spline but practically everyone that has a 60 upgrades the outers to 35 spline because its cheap, its a direct swap and its the weakest link on a D60)

The ring and pinion are bigger (10.5" vs. 9.75") but that means less clearance and the ring and pinion on a D60 are seldom a weak point.

Of course knuckles and inner c's are bigger on the D70 but again, seldom an issue.

If you could get one for a decent deal I'd jump on it.

Having said that, I wouldn't trade the D60 in the front of mine for a D70 front even if there were no cost involved, wouldn't be worth the extra weight and loss of clearance to me.

There was an article in one of the 4wd truck mags, talked about Dana 60s and 70s. There isn't a whole lot more strength between the two, but the 70s is a monster compared to a 60. Quigley had some on display years ago at Bloomsburg, they are pretty cool, but need big ass tires to make up for lost ground clearance.

It's a drivers drop D70 and I was considering putting it in my Duramax for sledpulling but I'll prolly just use the 79 HP D60 I just snagged :D.

I watched a rerun of Extreme 4X4 the other day and they made a 14 bolt FF front axle that was a MONSTER.... but with that being said, I would imagine that it would only be good for pulling due to the ground clearance.
